Hi everyone.

I have been on the pill since i was 12! Due to heavy periods. A thick night time pad would leak after half an hour of being used.

I am now 18 and work full time. My doctor said maybe i should now give my body a 6 month break from the pill.

I am worried my periods will be awful again and i don't want the embarassment of this at work.

My hair thinned while using the pill so this was a suggestion to improve my hair to.

Has anyone had an similar experiences and there periods end up being normal? And the heavyness was just an age thing?

Thanks in advance. X

Sorry I've no advice but didn't want to leave your post unanswered.

It's not an age thing, my periods were fine at 18

Honestly, I'd talk to Family Planning rather than a GP about this, as they specialise in that area of medicine.

However anecdotally, I didn't have a gap in taking the pill for many many years, and when I did have an enforced gap, I fell unhappily pregnant. Frankly, it ruined my life for years (won't go into it here).

If you don't have to have a gap, then don't. But take proper medical advice.

Oh and my periods are better now aged 36 than they have ever been before, but at your age I was soaking a super plus extra tampon in an hour....

Has the Dr not discussed fitting an IUS (Mirena or equivalent)? The dosage of hormones is far less. They are life changing for many women - I went from being anaemic due to heavy periods to not having had one at all for five years! And I dare say, at your time of life and just establishing your career, you won’t be wanting to get pregnant just yet?

I was older than you at the time, but had been on pill for years and came off it while docs were investigating some symptoms. My periods were horrible when I stopped the pill. Turned out I had endometriosis, which was being controlled by the pill. So if you do come off it and your periods are still awful, take the chance to get investigated!

As far as I understand it, there’s no particular reason why you need to give your body a break from the pill. So just stay on it if it’s working for you.

Hi,

Everyone thanks for all your advice! Mountaindweller my doctor suspects i have endo but said she doesn't think there is any need to investigate further! Maybe i need to see another doctor.

I'll also ask more about the implant etc.. x
