hi everyone
we are just about to start trying for a baby and I have hypothyroidism I have asked my doctor when I should get my levels checked after conception (they are under control at the mo) and she said at 12 weeks but that sound ridiculous as a baby demands this the most in the first 12 weeks! any advice on how you have gotten on would be of great help please XX

Hello! I am currently pregnant with 4th DC and have hypothyroidism. I’ve never had a check until 12 weeks (with a consultant) then I see them once a month. Bur your GP has a duty of care and if you want to have your levels checked in between consultant visits then ask. Hope this helps!

Check out the NICE guidelines on pregnancy and hypothyroidism.

You'll probably need to print them out and take them to your GP.

In summary, your levels now need to be not only under control, but in the lower range of normal - under 2.5 now, and under 2 when you are pregnant. This is especially important in the first trimester. It's recommended that when pregnancy is confirmed your dose is increased immediately by 25-50mcg, as you will need more in the first trimester, and then monitored closely. You should be referred to a consultant during your pregnancy.

Expect to have to manage and drive this yourself, I'm afraid. I expected my GP to be a bit rubbish, but even the hospital consultant did bugger all during my pregnancy - I booked my own regular blood tests.
