Thinking of going with copper over mirena but are there any side effects I should know about?

I was told it could make my periods heavier and more painful, which was a no no for me as they were already excruciating and heavy.
Other than that it's the same as the mirena I believe. X

Disclaimer: I have only tried the mirena, not the copper coil.

I was tempted by the copper coil because of it being hormone free but one of the common side effects of the copper coil is that it can make your periods heavier and I already have issues with that so didn't want to risk them getting worse!

Other than that, I don't remember the nurse discussing any other potential issues with it. But I went to the family planning clinic here and they do a pre-fitting appointment where they go through it all with you and work out which one is best so I'd recommend that!

They don't recommend it for people with heavy ur painful periods.

Ollivander84 · 16/09/2017 00:44

Mine were already heavy, they haven't got worse or more painful but they do last a day longer. More that I have light bleeding a day longer if that makes sense
On my second one, and will be having another

I use the copper coil and was told the same about periods and read some horror stories too! But my periods stayed exactly the same, normal flow, not painful. The only difference I have noticed is I get a bit of sporting the day before my period comes.

I've had the copper coil since 2006. It made my periods ever so slightly heavier but certainly no more painful. Other than that no side effects whatsoever (unlike the many hormone pills I tried), it's been fab and I will never use anything else!

Sierra259 · 23/09/2017 07:36

I've had a copper coil for years as I can't use hormonal contraception. Initially I did notice much heavier periods, though they weren't painful. It's been in and out several times for conceiving DC and now I would say my periods with it aren't heavy or painful at all. I love it and will continue to use it for birth control as long as I can.

eyeoresancerre · 23/09/2017 07:42

It's given me a shorter cycle by a few days which is annoying but apart from that it's brilliant. I've only had it for 4 months and they say it takes 6 months to sort itself out in there. But no spotting or other side effects.
I'd read lots of horror stories in the internet about the side effects but so far it's working well for me. Nice to be free of the pill hormones that made me irritable and teary.
Also mine is for 10 years so I'm done until the menopause.

I had one fitted ten days ago. Just had minor period pains and spotting for a few days and just had my period - very normal and completely painless (I get the odd one that hurts) so I have this hopeful notion that there are no side effects. Should have had it years ago! Obviously everyone is different (and it's only been ten days) but I really do echo those up thread. Absolutely great :-) Good luck.

Usually had 6-7 day period now 12-14 days with generally spotting 4-5 days and 1-2 days of very heavy bleeding which I wasnt used to at all. I need to be extra prepared for those days otherwise im in trouble.

Never had a heavy period before.
