Huge blood clots 3 weeks after TFMR - is this normal? (Sorry if TMI)

On 12th August I made the heartbreaking decision to have a termination for medical reasons at 15 weeks after it was found that our baby had serious chromosomal abnormalities. He was deeply longed-for and I was amazed that DH and I had finally managed to conceive naturally given my age (38), so this has been an indescribable blow to us.

For the first 10 days after delivering him I had sharp stabbing pains, especially when sitting down, but these have now subsided. From day 1 I've bled constantly but it wasn't what I'd call heavy bleeding until the last few days. I've now started to pass blood clots - 4 alone today, each the size of an egg and the bleeding is far worse than any period I've ever experienced. However I'm in no pain and there is no bad smell.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so, is it normal? I saw two doctors before I went through with it and one said that should expect to bleed for a week and the other said up to six weeks. Neither mentioned that the bleeding would get worse over time though.

I'm loathe to go back to the hospital at this stage because it would involve going back to the place where I delivered my baby and would bring back those memories, not to mention the thought of being examined in such an intrusive way when I am bleeding all over the place – I don't feel I could cope with that mentally right now.

So is this normal and something I just need to ride out? Or do I need to face my worst fears and get down the hospital? Thanks in advance. Flowers

I don't have any experience of this, but I would ring your out of hours service or the NHS direct number. I know doctors occasionally post on threads like this, but I would be looking for informed medical advice in your circumstances. And I am very sorry to hear about your loss. Flowers

I'm sorry for your loss, but I do think you need to seek medical advice and sooner rather than later.

I'm really sorry for your loss.

Please go to hospital and get checked out. Blood clots bigger than a 50 pence piece need to be check as it could be retained plancenta, which could lead to an infection or other complications.

I know that you don't want to go to hospital after everything that has happened, but please go and get checked out especially as you're bleeding heavily and passing large clots.

Sorry to drip feed but 4 days after having him I passed what most definitely looked like a piece of placenta as opposed to a blood clot, as long as my hand and as wide as a couple of fingers. I'd seen and touched the placenta at hospital when I passed what the midwife believed was all of it, although it did look torn at one side which led me to think that what I passed 4 days later was the rest of it. These recent egg-sized clots look very different in appearance and texture however - much darker and less solid - more of a jelly texture (again, sorry if TMI) so I hadn't considered that this might be more retained placenta.

Yes this happened to me. I can't remember the exact details - how long after the TFMR but it was a similar time frame.

I remember having to keep going to the toilet as I was bleeding so much and then one time a clot fell out of my knickers that was so big it was as though my liver had fallen out!

I was put on to those antibiotics that you can't drink on. I can't think of the name..and then was rescanned. The scan showed everything was fine.

Anyway, I'm so so sorry you are going through this.

I also remember being at work and I flooded so badly it went on the chair. I was crying as it was so upsetting.

chickhonhoneybabe · 01/09/2017 22:05

It sounds like you probably passed some placenta, due to the size of it.

Placenta feels gritty if you rub it between your fingers, however due to your bleeding and psssing large clots please go and get checked out.

You might need some antibiotics to prevent infection, or need some iron tablets due to your blood loss.

How are you OP? Did you seek medical help?
