Mirena renewal - Yes or No

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/08/2017 20:32

I'm coming up to 5 years with my Mirena and I don't know whether I want to replace it or try something else so I'm interested to hear other people's experience of renewal.

When I had mine fitted it was painful but bearable. Then I had the most awful pains on and off for the next two days that were worse than labour (I have had two babies without anything other than paracetemol), then 5 months or so of constant bleeding and awful, painful acne on my back. I've also gained a stone and a half in weight and I just can't shift the extra stone but that might be my age. I'm 35.

It did settle down except I started getting very painful breasts every month about two years ago and I'm generally ok with it.

However, if I have it replaced is it likely to be as painful or have the bleeding/acne/weight gain again? If it is, I don't think I want to do it. My periods were quite heavy after my babies but manageable with a mooncup so I'm not overly bothered about the no period thing - it's a nice bonus but not essential.

I would be very grateful to hear how renewal went for others, particularly those who had problems with it initially.

Can I jump on this thread too? My mirena is due out in a couple of months and I'm trying to decide what to do.
I've lost 3 stone this year but the last couple of stone is just refusing to move and I'm wondering if it's my coil preventing it from coming off?
Also for the first 4.5 years my libido was non exsistent, it's better now but wondering f it's because the hormones are less now it's coming to the end of the 5 years!

I'm considering the copper coil, it will be a pain to have periods again (and possibly heavier) but I think I want a break from hormones. I've been on the pill/coil/pregnant for 20 years

I had the mirena fitted for 3 months and it was the worst three months of my life.

I thought it was a great alternative to getting the pill but from the day I had it fitted everyday i had the following:

  • daily bleeds
  • bloating
-alot of weight gain -pain

Initially I thought it would pass and everyday it just wasn't getting better so when it got to 3 months I took it out and honestly i felt instant relief. I dont know whether it was placed incorrectly but it just didnt sit right with my body.

Additionally I think the hormones completely threw me off with weight gain and mood swings.

As annoying as it was, I stuck to condoms for 6-9 months (apparently thats how long it takes for all your hormones to leave body) and thankfully my patient boyfriend didnt mind. Safe to say, only toward the 6-9 month mark, was I able to lose the two stone I had put on and was feeling like a happy me again!

I'm just about to have mine replaced, and after a consultation with the nurse am going to try the Jaydess. Similar to Mirina but 3 yrs instead of 5 and a lower chemical release. I loved my Mirena for the first few years but recently it's been fucking about with my periods, has started to cause some aching, and I suspect is contributing to my complete lack of sex drive (or maybe that's the DCs!).

I've just had mine taken out as we're considering another baby. Removal was fine, no more uncomfortable than having it put in (which I did 6 weeks post-partum 5 years ago). will have it replaced when we make a decision whether to have another baby or not (whole other thread!) Sorry not much help really!

I had mine replaced on Monday. It wasn't particularly nice, old one came out easily but had to have a cervical block and dilatation to fit new one. I'm still bleeding quite heavily, and it feels very crampy and uncomfortable.
I'm 46, and was told I could keep this one for 7 years. I had one at 30, on a medical trial and have had one ever since replaced every 5/6 years. I've found that after 2 c sections, my periods were unbearable and I literally get no bleeding other than odd spotting. I do get a lot of breast pain every month, but that's liveable with. However, I have a horrendous ordeal to lose weight, and I do wonder if the coil has been a part of that. For me, periods without the Mirena meant being housebound for one week of the month (worst ever moment in entire life was standing up in my dads house and flooding all over a rug, he wanted to call an ambulance Blush). That outweighs all the negatives for me.

Thanks for the posts. I haven't heard of Jaydess so will investigate that.

I'm still undecided.
