Copper coil or Mirena?

I'm booked in for a coil fitting this week. I was going to go with the copper coil as I'm not a huge fan of artificial hormones (or hormones in general tbh) but I'm wobbling about the heavier periods and general horror stories.

I've had the mirena before but only for a few months, and iirc I liked it, but got awful back pain. This could have been a placement issue though so I'm willing to try again I suppose.

So anyone, anywhere, which one would you recommend I go for?

I have no side effects at all with the Mirena. I find it so liberating not having any periods, no more buying pads and tampons. Will keep having them until the menopause and will be happy not to have a period ever again!

I went for the 5 year copper coil today. Insertion was ok if a bit pinchy and spotting a bit now but fingers crossed this is a good option for me

Good luck! If you do find you don't like it, it can be quickly removed. My spotting and cramping settled within 24hrs after insertion.

Those of you that had the Mirena and then the weight fell off when you had it removed - did you have the copper one fitted straight away or was there a period of time between the 2 coils??

I've had my copper coil now for nearly 3 months and I love it. My periods aren't heavier and I actually feel like I have less period pain! Prior to having it fitted I had been on the pill for 11 years.

The only negative was having it fitted which was without a doubt the most painful experience of my life so far (but they struggled to fit it) and also the bleeding afterwards was crazily heavy for around 4 days. Once it's settled in though it's great and I'd do it all again tomorrow.

I've got the copper coil, had it put in a few months ago. I've always been very lucky and not suffered with period pains. The first couple of months I did get period pains but it has already settled and is much the same as before, maybe one day longer.

I'm very happy with it and no weight gain or other hormonal pill side effects.
