mirena coil - good or bad?

Twinkie84 · 14/04/2016 09:30

Please can you share your experiences of the mirena? I'm seriously considering getting one fitted?

I have been on the pill for years and having 2 young boys; won't be having any more children any time soon. I am thinking of getting a long term contraceptive but not sure what?

Been to the GP this morning and been given a leaflet but my mind is boggled!!

Can you all share your experiences - good and bad? And if you suggest any other long term methods?

Thanks

Thank you for all your replies and advice.

I think I'm seriously going to consider having one and see how I get on!

Yes definitely go for it.

You WILL need to bear with it. It can take a few months to settle down as don't forget you're putting something foreign into your body that your body will try to fight Grin.

But it's soooo worth it .

My lovely lady GP swears by them. She's on her fifth !

I'm on my fourth. This one was fitted after discovering fibroids and has taken me over the menopause. My gynae says despite the meno I may still have one more.

I have loved this method of contraception, no periods, no pmt, no bother and no pregnancies. I had a dabble with an implant for 6 months and I bled for almost the whole time. For me it was a wonder.

The problem I had with the fitting of the first one was that my cervix would not open at all for them to measure and insert it. Four tries later they nearly had to resort to using a metal instrument as the plastic one was useless.
After they managed to get it in I felt shaky, very nauseous and then nearly fainted in the waiting room afterwards.
The cramps after were like labour after pains so I spent about six hours in bed with a hot water bottle and some major painkillers.
The second fitting was much better in comparison, very uncomfortable but nowhere near as bad as the first. No pains or cramps afterwards; altogether a much more positive experience.

I found insertion worse than a smear, it is more intense and lasts a bit longer. I found it a really unpleasant experience, rather than painful. Lovely nurse held me hand and talked to me throughout.

If you have a sexual health clinic locally go there as they are more experiences than GPs at doing it if you are worried

My GP couldn't get mine in despite two tries. I have PCOS so I have horrible PMS and cramping. I'm not sure if it is suitable for me or not. I didn't get on at all with the pill except yasmin which was a god send. I'm finished having children now so I would like something to ease of my periods until menopause.

Miloarmadillo1 · 16/04/2016 07:22

Hated mine. Insertion was unpleasant but not worse than I expected, had very bad cramps for 2 days. Then 8 months of intermittent unpredictable bleeding, zero libido and felt grumpy and sad the entire time. If we attempted sex it was painful. The only positive was it worked extremely well as a contraceptive. I begged them to remove it. My DH is getting the snip.

I had one fitted after my son was born - waited the correct amount of time. I choose it because they are meant to be good for PMS.
I had it taken out 6 weeks later because I went from thinking I wanted to kill my husband (now ex!) to PLANNING how to kill my husband. Smile
Felt horrendous and my hair was falling out like crazy (more than just normal post pregnancy shed).
