Mirena Coil insertion - hurt?

Due to have my mirena coil replaced tomorrow. Does it hurt? I had the last one inserted under GA as was having a fibroid removed at the same time so no experience if it being done without anaesthetic. Should I expect bleeding? Any other things I need to know?

It was a little bit painful but not for long, then period like pains for the rest of the day. No big deal.

Caledonian...I swapped from Mirena to copper coil as I didn't want to have hormonal contraception anymore. I had regular, normal periods with every Mirena (have had 3), I must be one of the few who do! The copper coil has been great but, I do get longer periods, although not heavier. It doesn't particularly bother me though.

Several failed attempts, and had to get it inserted at a special clinic both times. Hurt like fuck. Removal was pretty easy though.

I've had two; the first pre DS hurt like mad even though it was done with LA. The second, I barely noticed going in as it was 6 weeks after having DS natural birth- hence cervix had been stretched beyond belief. I pulled the second out myself the moment DH agreed to try for #2. I'm now 36 weeks and plan on having another mirena after DD is born....ill just have to make sure I don't recognise the Dr from an NCT coffee morning first Blush.

Update:

Okay, all done and dusted now. Procedure was they looked for threads (which they obviously couldn t see as they'd been cut too short previously and disappeared into womb; did a scan to locate mirena and threads; doctor tried to get hold of them under supervision of consultant (who was lovely and tried to distract me by chatting). He then took over cause first dr couldn t do it and being more experienced, whipped it out quickly. He said that you just 'have to go for it' (think first dr was inexperienced and tentative). He then handed it all back over to first dr to put new one in. The health care professional took hold of my hand at this point - which helped alot as it was a bit painful on insertion. Momentary pain (sharp rather than period-like though as I think it 'caught' as it opened out once in there. From start to finish I was in there about 1.5 hours though! Need to go back to clinic in 6 weeks to check all's okay via a scan. Bit of spotting afterwards but manageable. Phew! That's that for 4 years now.

Blimey need you're brave! X well done - I'm suddenly so scared for mine it is unbelievable. X glad it all went okay though x

I still feel a bit traumatised and it was 7 years ago, plus I am not normal fussed about a bit of pain.

I had never given birth, and there was a lot of pain in my cervix so I imagine if you have given birth it's a gazillion times better.

Anyway different bodies. But the no periods thing was fab once everything calmed down.

Due to have my first one replaced shortly. I was waiting for the discomfort on fitting when she snapped her gloves off as was finished..... And I'd forgotten to take any painkillers. Grin

That was 3 months after CS

fastdaytears · 23/01/2016 14:52

AA that sounds amazing! Can we swap cervixes? I'd love to have another one but not brave enough!

I had mine done today and the most painful part was getting undressed in front of the Dr and nurse...

Dr used the same type of speculum that I found more comfortable when I had my smear (which was very kind of her) she measured my uterus (which felt a bit like an electric shock) and then she put the mirena in.. I'm having a few cramps now but otherwise feel good x
