Hysterectomy anyone?

Hi all, I'm new here and just wondered if anyone could offer any advice on hysterectomy / total hysterectomy? I've just come off cerazette because it made me feel like driving my car into a brick wall... I've had heavy periods for years and have sizeable fibroids plus I've had two failed ablations so am beginning to feel hysterectomy would be wise for me! I'm 47 so if I'm average, have another five years of hellish periods as an alternative... Has anyone had the total hysterectomy and can you tell me your experiences? Especially what recovery was like? I'm a single working parent so very nervous about being out of action for too long. In advance, many thanks.

I had my womb, cervix, tubes and also both ovaries removed. Was very scared, but I can honestly say it was fine. I felt very tired afterwards for a couple of weeks but gradually built up strength . Mine was also due to huge fibroids. I had the bikini line cut. I felt so well right after the op I didn't need a single pain killer , although for some of course this will be different. I was home on the fifth day. HTH

I started to do little things like dusting etc after a couple of weeks at home, but I am pleased that I had it done after all the odd bleeding times and heavy clots. You can probably pick up a leaflet about it from somewhere with more info. I found it very reassuring and informative. Good luck whatever you decide.

Hi, i had a total vaginal hysterectomy 3 weeks ago due to a uterine prolapse, I was in hospital for 5 days as I had a reaction to the GA and also lost quite a bit of blood during the op.

My recovery at home has been slow to say the least, as we only have the one toilet which is upstairs, most of the first week at home was spent upstairs as I couldn't manage the stairs at all, i still have some problems walking and haven't ventured outside yet.

As the op was done vaginally I have no external stitches but did have approx 80 internal stitches so I'm still in a lot of pain most of the time along with tenderness down below. My stomach is still swollen but I'm trying to move about a bit more each day. I still get very tired but a lot of that is due to me losing almost a stone in weight since I came home from hospital. I have lost my appetite and also have a strange metallic taste in my mouth all the time which puts me off eating.

Reading this back it sounds horrendous but honestly I am sure I will look back and know that it was the best thing I ever did.

Due to the nature of my job I will be off work for near on 3 months and I had this plan of sunbathing the whole summer while the kids play in the garden but so far thats gone out the window.

I havent had any medical issues since the op, everything's working as it should and I only have minimal bleeding. Not sure how long that will last but it's not too bad really.

I'm 42 by the way and have 3 children.

For me it was the only option given to me by the doctors due to the severity of my prolapse so maybe it was easy for me as I didn't really have to make any decisions.
