Tears and tantrums on microgynon- does this end?

Started taking it 2 weeks ago. Ever since ive been veering between bursting into tears and snapping at the tiniest things. I'm miserable. Im so angry for no reason. I'm snapping at people. Its awful.

Does this go away? I really cant go on like this.

I was put on microgynon when I was 17 because I had really heavy periods. Apart from the time when I was pregnant and a very short time I tried out the patch, I've always used them and I'm now 25. I can honestly say, for me it didn't go away. I would have okay days but I would often find myself getting very angry and upset over silly things, it made my hormones crazy. I was too lazy to find an alternative but have been off them for a while now and not experienced the ridiculous mood swings and just changed to the implant. BUT that's just me, I think it was because they contained both progesterone and oestrogen and my body wasn't happy about so many hormones. I know you can get progesterone-only pills so if you find you aren't having much luck with microgynon you could always look into that instead?

Thanks bexicle. I wonder if there is an adjustment period where i should give it a chance but really i am struggling. I probaly will go and ask about getting the progesterone only pill tbh.

It is the cheapest pill, so it is always prescribed first. I wouldn't give it an adjustment period. Book an appointment at a proper sexual health clinic and get advice on what contraception would best meet your needs.

My best friend was verging on suicidal before finishing her first packet, so sorry if this seems extreme.

Bexicle22 · 13/04/2015 20:22

There were a few occasions where I also became so depressed I was suicidal. During those times I was single so wasn't having sex so I stopped taking the pill for a little bit and found I always felt much better off them. Contraception works different for everyone, maybe see your GP or go to a sexual health clinic as MrsPeabody suggested and explain that you're having a hard time adjusting to them and ask if they have an alternative that might suit you better.

SurlyCue · 13/04/2015 20:23

Mrspeabody it doesnt sound extreme, i am feeling so violently up and down i actually worried today that i was at risk of feeling suicidal. Ive realised ive completely shut down socially in just the last week or so, i dont want to see or talk to anyone. Its quite scary.

No not for me. Keep going back and inconvenient as it may be for a while...try new ones until you find one that suits. Good luck!

Get off it asap! I turned into a snivelling wreck on microgynon. Hideous. It took me a good while (months) before i finally made the connection. And I had the headtilt 'do you think antidepressants might help' conversation when I brought it up with the gp. I still get cross about that consultation, and it was nearly 20 years ago now! Needless to say, as soon as I came off the bloody microgynon, I was fine again.

gingerbreadmam · 13/04/2015 20:31

i came off it as it made me feel down and huge mood swings i never felt like me on it. much more normal when i stopped it.

SurlyCue · 13/04/2015 20:32

Thanks i'll bin the packet tonight and get an appoinment at sexual health clinic.

I hope you find something that suits you better. It's a horrible game of trial and error.

My friend felt like a weight has been lifted when she came of hers. Good luck

SurlyCue · 13/04/2015 20:40

Thanks mrspeabody
