mirena coil removal

Hi just after some advice really or what I can expect. I'm having my mirena removed tomorrow. I've had it in for 5+ years had it put in just after having my dc3.
Who I conceived 6 weeks after having my dc2 (I'm trying to say I haven't had a period for 7/8 years being pregnant, then pregnant again then coil in straight away ) so have no clue where in my cycle I am as had no bleeding in all that time.
Will I bleed afterwards? How long til I get a normal cycle?
We aren't trying to conceive but I just want to feel like me again instead of full of hormones.
Oh & the coil strings are wrapped around the mirena so will it hurt to get it out. I'm guessing it won't be as straight forward as a 'normal ' removal.
Sorry for long post & tia ?

Hi Sally
I am on my second Mirena and I did have a gap of 6 months between the two to check my other symptoms were not being caused by it (they weren't it was Sjogren's!).
They are not pleasant to have put in or removed because it involves using an instrument to forcibly dilate (open) the cervix. My brain gets outraged by this and I tend to go a bit faint. But they are sooo fab that I and my two sisters are converts. We just grit our teeth and hum a tune and think about something else...
No periods since I had my two DCs has been gr8 - and saved £££ not having to buy stuff.
And yep periods return afore long.
One tip though - ideally have this done at a Family Planning clinic as they are well practised in Mirenas - a GP will have far less experience. If it has to be the GP ask how many they have done (ideally in front of the nurse assisting as they will not fib in front of her) and don't allow a novice to practice on you! (Well unless you feel up to it and public spirited in which case you are informed and empowered and it will be a positive adult interaction).
Oh and I was puzzled by your comment about hormones - it is the other way around. The Mirena delivers a tiny amount of synthetic progesterone locally in the uterus and cons the body into thinking it is sort of pregnant. Without it your own hormones pour back in to regulate your cycle and then you get the rollercoaster effect as they are the real deal.
All the best!

I found removal much, much better than having sweep done.
I had slight bleeding at 2 weeks, a more normal period at 4 weeks. And then got pregnant 6 weeks after having it removed. Grin

I had mine removed on Friday and started bleeding heavily this morning. I'm changing pads every couple of hours and have "flooded" two pairs of trousers. Not fun.
