Copper coil (IUD) nightmare - what to do?

I had the copper coil fitted for first time on Thurs (four days ago). In serious discomfort on Friday, GP checked it. Looked fine. She said I'd get used to it. I then started bleeding like a period (period not due) and still in serious pain.

I want it out! Really concerned they'll make me persevere but it feels totally wrong, like my body is trying to eject it.

Anyone had similar experience? Will the GP remove it after only a week?

Your GP should remove it no matter what. I just had a mirena coil fitted and I was in quite bad pain for the first week. Mine is still "settling in" and I get cramps and bleeding whenever I do physical activity. I had the copper coil previously and had to have it removed after about a year of having it in as every time I got my period I was in severe pain.

If you can, I would try to tough it out because it could just be an adjustment period, however if you are in severe pain, you should have it removed. Your GP should take it out if you are having severe pain, it's your body, it's your choice.

I hope you feel better soon. In the mean time, make sure you stay hydrated and eat regularly as being hungry and thirsty can make pain worse. Lots of warm baths if you can, if not try a hot water bottle. Make sure you are taking paracetamol and/or ibuprofen. I personally found Ibuprofen worked best, but because the pain was quite bad I was taking both, alternating them.

Thanks for your reply! Have an emergency appt this morning, only certain GPs are trained to deal with coils so I don't know if the one I've got can take it out. I'm just going to be v assertive though. I'm pretty sure a device isn't going to suit me if it's already agony!!

No form of contraception should leave a person in so much pain.

I had a copper coil fitted on Weds. The doctor did tell me your body does try to reject it and she wasn't wrong, I felt like I was in labour on Thursday, it was so bad. I didn't bother calling the doctors because I figured they'd tell me to take painkillers and see how it goes, and also because the idea of having it removed made me feel a bit sick! Anyway I had a bit of cramping yesterday but it was quite mild and nothing yet today, so fingers crossed. It makes sense there'd be a period of adjusting to it, but if you're not happy with it then they should get it out for you. Good luck!

Just to update, GP took it out straight away. Pain gone instantly. The coil is clearly not for me!
