persuading Dr to remove mirena

Honeydukes · 11/01/2014 12:39

Just got an appointment to have my mirena removed but the reception told me the Dr may not remove it as it's only been in 6 months (bloody long enough) so I'm thinking lay it on thick about it affecting my mental health (will mention recently stated having counseling), my libido which is affecting my relationship and spotting all the time. Although how they can refuse to remove I don't really get.

It may be more that only some GPs or nurses are fully trained to remove the Mirena. I can't imagine them actually refusing to arrange for it to be removed if you ask

Vintagebeads · 15/01/2014 21:46

Oh I can.
I had the implanton in and the trouble I had getting it out,I had to get arsey in the end.

Go in and say you want it out, now. You know your body best and it does not suit you.
Be firm, I wish I was it took three bloody appointments to get someone to take it out in the end.

sleeplessbunny · 15/01/2014 21:48

say you want to start ttc?

AntoinetteCosway · 15/01/2014 21:48

I begged for 6 months (total suffering: a year) before someone took my implanon out. In the end I got pretty hysterical and said I wasn't leaving the surgery until it was out. They don't like removing long-term contraception because it's more expensive for the NHS, but as far as I'm concerned I have paid enough tax to be allowed to decide when something that was supposed to help is actually a physical and mental health nightmare. Be assertive OP.

DoItTooJulia · 15/01/2014 21:48

What? Drs can refuse to remove it? Surely not.

Would the receptionist know this?

I'm quite shocked at the thought. A woman on here took it out herself. Not recommending it, but surely it can't take long/be difficult for a dr to do??

Leafmould · 15/01/2014 21:49

Don't go to the gp if you think they are going to be arsey about it, go to the gum clinic. They are less invested in the finances of having put the mirena in.

DoItTooJulia · 15/01/2014 21:52

It's about money??

I'm even more shocked.

Christmascandles · 15/01/2014 21:56

Yes I think it is about money. I went to have mine removed, but didn't see my regular dr and even tho I felt like I'd been kicked in the stomach, spotting etc. he said the practice manager wouldn't be very happy if he took it out and I had to go back. I got it taken out in the end. It never suited me, always spotting, pain etc.

DH had vasectomy in the end as our family was complete.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 15/01/2014 21:56

They can't refuse to remove it. If you have no joy, go to a family planning clinic.

ThenAgain · 15/01/2014 22:00

I was given a really hard sell on the mirena by my doctor even though I wasn't interested in contraception or asking for it.

Honeydukes · 16/01/2014 13:13

My appointment was at the family planning clinic. Luckily I had a really nice nurse. I told her all about the effect was having on my mood and libido and the effect that was having on my relationship with DP and she just said do you want it out now. Really quick and easy coming out and swear I'm feeling better already. So glad in free

When I wanted my coil out after 3 months I told dr I wanted to try for a baby and they had to take it out....

dawdling · 21/01/2014 06:25

I had the same problem. My husband removed mine. Next time I saw my GP I just told her so she could update my record. She did raise one eyebrow.

I just lost patience with arguing with them.

Had read on MN previously about women removing their own, but didnt fancy going that far....

WeAreEternal · 21/01/2014 07:36

I had trouble getting my implan removed that was put in after I had DS, I didn't want it but I was talked into it by the midwife.
I had a horrible reaction, my hormones were all over the place and i partially blame the implant for the PND I developed.
I spent 8months begging my GP to remove it, I literally sobbed in her office on several occasion but she refused, other gps and the nurse in the practice also refused. In the end I had to change doctors surgeries to find someone to remove it.

I have a friend that removed her own after 6months of her GP refusing to do it.

AntoinetteCosway · 21/01/2014 09:36

Fucking hell, how did she remove her own implant? Actually, don't answer that.

Sounds like your experience was similar to mine. It felt like torture being told I had to keep it.

HumphreyCobbler · 21/01/2014 09:40

This gives me the rage

Your body, your decision Angry

Poopoopeedooo · 27/01/2014 23:09

Grrrrr, this makes me so mad!! Doctors are brushing aside what we are saying because none of it is measurable in blood analyses or quantifiable on any scientific apparatus- it's just us girlies talking about the way we feel and everyone knows what a silly hysterical bunch we females are.... Just hush dearie and be glad you can give your man regular none-consequential sex. eye roll
Mirena is manufactured by a massive pharmaceutical co who have hard-sold it like never before to a receptive medical fraternity. If you read the listed side effects according to package insert, they are pretty airy-fairy and benign. The constant repetition of a myriad of physical and psychological problems, cited on plenty of forums including here on MN and thousands of others would make one think that perhaps they should be taken more seriously and properly researched.
I had all my misgivings cheerfully poo-pooed by my gynae and stupidly believed my mood-swings, demon temper, lack of libido, weight gain, sore boobs, yadda yadda were all my "stage of life" and had Mirena no. 2 inserted only to have a MASSIVE hormonal rollercoaster ride which was the giveaway really.
Sorry-long winded .... Nuff said. Get rid of the Bastard thing!

Poopoopeedooo · 27/01/2014 23:12

Oh ps... Did you know that none other than the famous Erin Brocovich (sp?) is leading an anti-Mirena crusade? Hoorah!
