Coil 'migration'? Any advice

Chopsypie · 07/01/2014 18:19

I've had a coil in for around 18 months now. I had one in before this one, but it fell out after 6months.
I went to GP today as I couldn't feel my strings. GP has said that it's migrated and referred me for a scan to check placement.

Should I just give up? Can my cervix/uterus be unsuitable for a coil?

Also, what are the chances of me falling pregnant if it's not in properly? I would be thrilled but DH wouldn't be.

Sorry to ask q's here, GP ushered me out before id had time to process what she had said.

My best mate recently had a op to remove hers it had twisted upside down and moved right up so doc/nurse could not get it without putting her under general anethetic she was in agonising pain most weeks up until her op she said worse than labour. They did tell her that it would have been inaffective so she was panicking but she wasnt pregnant hope this helps a little x

Hi Chopsy, I really feel for you. Lots and lots of sympathy here. I have not had a whole lot of luck either. I am on my third iud/ius in 5 years! First one was removed to ttc, second one fell out without me knowing leading to an unplanned pregnancy. Now the current bugger is lodged somewhere in the lower part of my uterus. Went to have it removed yesterday and it is stuck! The strings are hanging so low down its ridiculous but it just wont come out! I have to wait until next Wed to see if my gynae consultant can get it out.

If your coil is not in the right place there is obviously a risk of pregnancy but its difficult to say really. I would have thought if its in the uterus it will be preventing pregnancy to some degree. However is it possible it may have come out altogether? My second IUD has never been accounted for and I would have thought I would have noticed it coming out. Apparently though, I was told its quite easy for one to come out inside a clot of blood during your period. Especially if you are sitting on the loo! Gross, I know.
I was also told yesterday by the nurse that sometimes the coil can move up slightly after being fitted, and then the strings that may have been trimmed quite short already then become really hard to get to.
As for whether your uterus is suitable for iuds I don't know. All I know is there is no way I am ever having one again after such rotten luck!
All the best with getting it out. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks, I'm pleased to know it's not just me!

I don't think it's come out, I don't have periods with it in, so would hopefully have noticed it.

I'm hoping it'll still be there, but need to consider leaving it in and risking it moving again and potentially ending up pregnant (as I said, I'd love it but it's not really practical) or having it out and trying something new.

just because you cant feel the strings doesnt mean it has migrated as the strings could have just moved through the cervix. I had ultrasound and an xray and then eventually a trans vaginal scan found my coil right where it should be in my womb. I have just left it where it is.

NotHerRealName · 07/01/2014 20:36

Yes that's a good point powerhoop.

It was my consultant who found mine was in the wrong place when she examined me for a different problem. She put me straight on the pill though for back up. She sent me for an ultrasound which confirmed it is not in the right place.
I am guessing its the mirena you have if you have not had periods (lucky on that count then!)
I bet its in there, and has just moved up a bit so the strings are not visible like powerhoop says.
I am going to stick with the pill until DH has the snip. That's if he ever gets round to booking it. Grrrrrrr.
