Help me decide about getting Mirena removed or not.

So I have had the Mirena for just over a year now. In that time I have felt constantly bloated, put on over a stone (addmitedly not enough excerise and too much choc is a contributing factor), been constipated pretty much constantly. Had dry eyes (which I only just found out is a mirena side effect). Been ping ponging between thrush and BV for months and months. Just generally not been quite right. Oh and I am currently passing brown and pink 5p pieces of tissue and have been for last few days which is a first but I vaguely suspect it is failed pregnancy tissue as about a month or two ago I had the faintest of pink lines on a test and odd nausea, cramps and fizzy nipples (which is my main preg sign) but then they went away. had some odd cramps since but now just this weird tissue.

On the plus side- no periods (but mine were never too horrific anyhow) and no worrying about contraception- just being able to get on with sex whenever is brilliant.

So erm I am at my limit with contraceptive options. Have two kids. Not 100% sure I don't want a 3rd so want to leave option open but likelihood is not. Do not want to get pregnant accidantally though. Can't take pill or any other hormonal contraception as I go loopy. Was using Nuvaring which I found awesome but had to come off that due to migraines. Can't use diaphragm as just couldn't get it to work, which basically leaves bloody unrealiable condoms (I got mirena fitted after a condom failure). I am hapy to get sterilised at 40 (8years from now) as I dfinitely won't want any more by then. But in next 8years what do I do. The mirena has been bloody brilliant apart from the side effects above (which may not all be the mirea's fault) so I don't know what to decide for the best.

Do the benefits outwiegh the costs of this method of contraception?

(I am going to docs next week about the weird clots but she is a mirena advocate and I will need to be really firm if I want it out- otherwise I will just waver!)

Would it be wort trying the copper coil? It didn't agree with me (I have Mirena now), but no hormones whatsoever.

Ladycurd · 01/01/2014 19:21

My main fear with the copper coil is the heavier periods and the fact that it is much less reliable than the mirena. I have had an ecoptic pregnancy so only have one tube. If you get preg on coil is more likely to be ectopic, ruled out copper coil just in case for my remaining tube. Having said that tempted to swap to see if things improve.

Funnily enough I was just sitting here thinking about seeing the doctor as have had a Mirena coil fitted for the same time as you and beginning to get strange cramps again and back ache similar to the awful period pains I used to suffer.

I'm not convinced that you would be sterilised though tbh, is that something done 'just' for contraception purposes any more?

Will read your thread's replies with interest OP.

Funny how it happens after a year! (Watch out for clots if they come!)

I think they do still sterilise, can be a bit of a battle though- for me is only half a job- I only have one tube!

Will do!

Bit upset about it actually as thought I was 'cured' but would appear nothing seems to work 100%.

Copper coil? I have only had mine a few months (longer than I had the mirena). Periods are much heavier but am hoping that will settle.
