Mirena coil - is it that bad?!

I will try to keep this short. Had a copper coil fitted in July ish. Periods now 8/9 days long and I have a 14 day break before it starts again. Anaemic, doctor unsure why I'm having two periods a month
Mini pill - been on, made anxiety worse
Combined pill - doc not happy due to smoking/weight
Nuva ring/patch - see combined pill
Injection ruled out due to massive family history of osteoporosis

CANNOT get pregnant, but won't sterilise me as 29 with no DC. I have no idea what to do. Periods before coil were v regular and I used Persona for about 18 months. Contemplated Persona in combination with cap/diaphragm but am losing weight fast (2.5 stone down) and they say it needs refitting if your weight changes
Help?!

I've just had my mirena removed. Had it fitted March, fitting itself was uncomfortable. Side effects for me were awful - very sore boobs, mother of all headaches that just wouldn't shift, even with pain killers, weight gain, acne, some hair thining. It did stop my periods almost straight away but instead I had pretty much constant spotting. Then I started to have pelvic pain with bleeding, pain was so bad I couldn't wear jeans! Went to my GP, she said I should stick it out. After a couple of days, things were worse so went to GP again, saw someone else. He removed it straightaway - I did threaten to rip itout myself! Turns out I also had a infection from it.

That was four weeks ago. Feel so much better, pain gone along with other nasty side effects.

It sounds great - no periods etc and it works for lots of women really well. It just didn't suit me x

I have one, they last for five years and i need it replacing in May. I have no periods, i just forget it's there, i think it's great.

It did have a few teething troubles - my periods hadn't started again as i was still breastfeeding dd2 and it made me bleed for a while. Also, i had sore breasts and felt a bit under the weather, i think because i was bfing it was trying to give me mastitis. But it didn't.

In summary - good! I recommend them!

The fitting doesn't worry me too much - the copper went in no issues. Still have the copper one in but the two a month periods are not brilliant. Just don't want to jump from the frying pan into the fire as such!

I'd say it's worth the risk!

jammiedonut · 28/11/2013 20:05

No problems here, give it a go, get it taken out if it doesn't work out for you.

RubyGoat · 28/11/2013 20:17

I've got the Mirena. Fitted this March. Painful to fit, sore for a few weeks, but after that no problems. Periods have almost gone.

OTOH someone else I know, had to get theirs removed, they didn't get on with it at all, major mood swings AFAIK & tiredness.

PuntCuffin · 28/11/2013 20:21

I had a copper after DS1 and could barely leave the house for weeks due to the state of my periods. I now have a Mirena after DS2. What a revelation. No weight gain, no periods, no side effects at all. I say give it a try, it can always be removed if it doesn't suit you.

PS both my sons are Persona failures so if you really don't want to get pregnant, I would not even bother.

Mine fell out !! Went for a wee and the next thing it's hanging out my fufu. Doesn't say much for my pelvic floor !

PennySillin · 28/11/2013 20:25

I have one, a bit sore to fit but once it was in I have completely forgotten it's there! No periods, no pmt, nothing tis fab for me but isn't for everyone. The good thing about it is if you don't get on with it you can take it out.

I may have to make an appointment to chat to coil nurse. Guess I'm worried because I hated the mini pill so much I'm trying to avoid hormones
It has to be virtually foolproof - currently using persona with copper coil

I had a copper one and exactly the same problem with frequent long hefty bleeds. Switched to Cerazette, but GP now convinced me to try Mirena, claiming I'd have much less hormonal side effects with it. Have it fitted next week and really hope it's going to be the right thing. The copper one was awful.
