Not getting on with pill(s). Is mirena/ copper coil worth a try?

I've tried many many brands of pill over the years. I got on with femodette before the dc so went back to it after dd (dc2) arrived.
I have no sex drive. I have headaches before and during and after my period. I have horrible mood swings/ pmt as well including feeling incredibly angry. :(

I need to stop taking it but I CANNOT get pg again. I need something.

Is mirena worth a try or will it be just as bad because of the hormones?
Would the copper coil be better?

Any advice?
I'm going to try and see the gp soon...

Yes mirena is definitely worth a try! Less hormonal and should reduce or stop your periods.
Can you go to a family planning clinic rather than your GP? Better to see an expert, in my opinion.

I have a copper coil and bar a few teething troubles it seems good.
I was warned that I might get heavier more painful periods but it seems fine, two periods in. I am a bit worried about the possibility of getting pregnant on it buy if I did, I would cross that bridge when I come to it but that's mainly to do with not feeling different/ like there's anything there!

What about Nuvaring? A hormonal ring you wear internally for 3weeks. I liked mine but got mirena fitted couple weeks ago as I have migraines. Nuvaring can be hard to get prescribed as £10 a month but if you make case for it you should be able to get it.
So far mirena is ok for me - still spotting almost 2weeks after insertion but that's common and should settle down in month or two. (HAd same first month of nuvaring). DH can't feel the strings and I like that I don't need to think about it.
Withdrawal method when used properly is actually 98% effective but only to be used if your partner can be trusted! Used in conjunction with natural family planning and also using a condom/abstaining during fertile time might be an option but if another baby is a definite no the mirena is best bet- 2/1000 women get preg on it apparently. Not bad!

Thanks!:)

I decided yesterday evening I'm going to stop taking the pill today. I've only just started taking another strip yesterday but I am fe up of it and after reading the leaflet it says to stop if you have unusually frequent headaches.

Lady curd - I had a look at nuvaring but I'm not sure I want to be fiddling every month and it looks huge from the picture I found! Shock I'm not keen on the idea of it tbh. Oh and withdrawal method seems far too risky to me - but maybe that's because I'd not entirely trust dh to do it right. Blush

Does anyone know if one or the other type of coil is better/ worse if you have pcos? I think that might be part of the reason why I haven't got on well with the pill(s) Confused

Copper coil got stuck & other coil made me put on weightHmm
My periods never stopped with either.

UnderwaterBasketWeaving · 28/12/2012 07:23

I've had the copper coil for a year now and it's ideal.

Period is a bit heavier, but only for 1 day each time. Not having the hormones is brilliant.

There are a lot of anecdotes around about people getting pg with the coil, but statistically it's more reliable than the pill (and of course you'd find more such people in a place like MN!)

SpanielFace · 28/12/2012 07:35

I got pregnant with the copper coil!

It is uncommon though, and before that happened I was really happy with it. I'd been on hormonal birth control for years, and it was nice to feel like my body was back to its normal cycles. I didn't have any heavier periods. I did find it painful being put in but I'd not had a baby - I believe it's not as bad if you have.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 28/12/2012 07:42

Eeek! Do you know why the coil failed spaniel? Confused

I'm fairly sure it'll hurt a lot as I'm rubbish with smear tests and although I have 2dc they were both c sections as I didnt get past 6cm with ds.

TMI question now... I know you have to check the threads are still there - are they noticeable for your DP?

Life would be easier (for me) if dh had the snip but he doesn't want surgery and I can't really blame him.

I need to go back and have my threads checked and be taught how to do it myself Blush.
I have had a rummage but I could not find anything!

notnagging · 29/12/2012 05:08

If you can't find anything maggie it may have slipped out or travelled. Get it checked out ASAP. Although rare mine traveled up to my womb & I had to have an operation to get it removed. Sad

Seabird72 · 14/01/2013 16:42

I wasn't told about having to check for the threads - just told to go back after a month to have it checked and then someon else told me that you have to check - I don't want to check! Abit stuck now as had it fitted last week and still worrying about possible side effects which I didn't check out first - if I had I would never have risked it and just gone back on the pill and anti-depressants for the pms.

notcitrus · 14/01/2013 17:54

I have PCOS, didn't get on with Cerazette, and am very happy with a copper coil - I was asked if I wanted Mirena and I said I wanted shot of all extra hormones.
I have short fingers and a long vagina and can't feel the threads myself but MrNC is happy to check...

SpanielFace · 15/01/2013 08:41

I don't know why it failed. The doctor that removed it when I was very early in pregnancy said that it was sitting low down, which makes me wonder if my body had tried to expel it and failed! But it isn't 100% effective anyway, I think it's something like 99.6% - in my head, I took that as being near enough 100%, but clearly it's not!

MajesticWhine · 15/01/2013 08:47

I love my copper coil. Periods were a bit longer to start with, but they are back to normal now. It's great having a normal natural sex drive.
It was uncomfortable having it put in, not actually painful. It took a couple of visits for them to get it in, which was annoying, but so worth it.
I don't check the threads to be honest, I did for the first few months. They are not noticable to DP.

bellamafia · 15/01/2013 09:16

I've just come off the combined pill for the past 10 days and I must say, I totally have noticed a difference. I was on it for 13 years since I was 17 and although it made my periods much much lighter with hardly any pain, end if last year I noticed al of a sudden, my sex drive came to nothing! I also noticed that I was border lining depression.

I'm going to take the coil with no hormones for sure! I feel like a human again. Strange to say yes, but I do feel much much better.

googietheegg · 26/01/2013 09:11

Just come across this thread and am v pleased. I have tried about 10 different pills and they all make me feel totally weird at certain times - latest one is Leeloo which is just the all the others. I've got a 9 month-old dd so don't want to get pregnant for a little while.
I used to be on depo which I really loved, but I want to wait to go back on that as I'm 36 so if we want another baby I can't hang about too long!
What other options are there? Mirena? It's mainly about mood swings for me.

Mockingcurl · 26/01/2013 09:26

Merena coil is fantastic. I had two and they changed my life. Regular, light periods. All my friends had one and loved them. Can't recommend them highly enough.
