Family planning

Can anyone give advice on the non hormonal coil? Any issues with it?

I have got PCOS, I had the marina coil which I think actually caused the PCOS as I didnt have it before the coil went in. So I took the coil out.

I tried celest combination pill, but I think it made my hormones worse, I felt really happy for a few weeks then really down for a few weeks, and this went on for the 3months that I was on it.

So now I am worried about putting hormones in my body.

I am thinking maybe the coil without the hormone might be the best option? Anyone else tried it?

Any problems with it?

I had the old-fashioned non-hormonal coil fitted (the family planning clinic was horrified, and kept insisting that the merina coil was the ONLY way to go), and had enormously heavy periods which lasted for three weeks - I'd only have a week or so clear of bleeding every month. I kept it in for a year in the hope that the bleeding would settle, but if anything it got worse.

I had the non hormonal coil in for about 2 years - took it out to ttc. I thought it was great & would happily go back to it (am pregnant now). I did have slightly heavier periods, as in heavier flow over around 4 days.

that sounds good, I have read a few horrible stories about it and I am sqemish and reading so many things about it is making my body feel icky....

I didnt get on too well with copper coil either - had about a week where I felt "normal" the rest of the time I had migraines & was either tearful or wanting to punch everyone. Periods could last 3 weeks, if you took into account the spotting the week before & trailing off the week after.

The GP just brushed all this off & said it was my body "setttling down" as I had the coil fitted at my 6/8 week check-up after DS.

With hindsight however, I should have realised that the copper coil was not for me as I have always been sensitive to metals & can only wear "precious" metals. I am unable to wear a watch for example as the back always gives me a rash (anyone got a gold watch going spare lol) and even hypo-allergenic earings make my ears sore.

It gave me terribly sore breasts. My gp said it raised my progesterone levels. It reached the point where I had permentanly sore breats, I removed it and within a couple of days felt normal again!

I tried the merina - but obviously you've already been there, and it didn't work for you. Have you tried the cap? It's a bit fiddly, but doesn't have any side-effects. I didn't mind it, but started getting 'can't-be-bothered' with it.

I had a copper coil fitted about four months ago and am really happy with it - no issues at all so far. Periods are longer and heavier than on the pill (but I had very light, two-day periods on Qlaira) but they do seem to be getting slightly shorter and lighter. Otherwise, I have no regrets about switching and find my moods are less affected than they were by the pill (have just asked DH and he has confirmed this!).

i have the copper coil. My periods are slightly heavier but other than that ive had no bother/babies! Also its in there for 5 years and i can just forget about it!

naughtyorouttacontrol we are using condoms now. I only took my coil out about 6 weeks ago and am a bit unsure of what to use now. I had it for nearly two years, it took a few months for the issues I had with it to really start. Me and DH don't want any more children so I think it's his turn now and he will have a vascestomy, seems so final

I'm on my second copper coil. Had the 1st in for 3y, took it out to TTC3 and was pregnant by my next period. Had anothe when Ds was 8w and never looked back!

I have PCOS and hormonal methods of contraception play havoc with it. I also think the pill contributed to my depression after DD1. Had slightly heavier periods after DS but they settled fairly quickly. I spot a bit too, or have a day of light bleeding a day or so after my period has finished. Never a problem though.
I would recommend it to anyone! :o

I have a copper coil, and I'm really happy with it. I dont think that my bleeding is much heavier (possibly slightly more overall). No troublesome side effects.
