Mirena replacement

Yuck yuck yuck - 5 years are up - Mirena need replacing.

I had the coil in order to control heavy/distressing and debilitating periods rather than for its contraceptive use.

When it was fitted it was extremely painful as I was told it had to be fitted whilst on my period. I was already curled up in agony before she started fiddling about in there so I cried throughout. I then spent 3 days in agony on painkillers.

After it was put in I bled for about 5 months constantly but very lightly (compared to my previous periods which were horrific). This was wonderful after what I'd been through before and it has been life-changing for me.

Will the replacement cause me the same pain? Will I have constant bleeding again?

The doctor seems unable to give me a straight answer. She has, however, agreed to do it while I'm not on a period.

Last time I had to have time off work and couldn't do anything so needed help at home etc. Should I expect this again?

Confused.

Should I be scared? (I am).

It shouldn't be as painful as that butI think people report a variety of experiences - and everyone has a different threshold of pain.

Did they use a local anasthetic when fitting it?

How about going to a family planning clinic - it may be that your gp doesn't fit so many coils so hasn't got such a good technique - someone in a fpc will probably fit a good few a week so will be much better at it.

My pain threshold is good. Dcs born with no pain relief or stitches.

No anasthetic offered that I recall (was in too much of a state).

Went to local general hospital last time as was too distressed at local surgery. Hospital saw me as a pathetic, hysterical time-waster and were not very kind.

I did carry on like a baby but I was in a real state. It was a horribly emotional experience because my period were so heavy/messy/painful and embarrassing.

My next coil is going to be changed whilst I'm under sedation as I find the process so painful, and I went into cervical shock. Have a word with your doctor or FP nurse and see if they can arrange this for you.

Thanks TheVisitor.

Why was this not offered to me? Did you have the pain as well?

Giving this a bump in the hopes of more advice.

Thanks in advance.

I just had one and wasnt on my period. It was painful but I would have thought 2nd one wouldnt cause 5 mths of bleeding as your body would be used to the hormone, no?

I didn't have the pain afterwards, but my BP and heart rate plummeted. Gave the doctor and nurse a fair old fright! Ask again for sedation.
