Contraceptive jag/implant and depression/anxiety

HI all,

Please can you help me out. I am a slave to my hormones and find that prior to menstruating I suffer from quite bad anxiety. I've had depression in the past and was on ADs for 3 years. I tried 2 different mini-pills but with too many side-effects I gave them up. I now take agnus castus which is great for the physical effects of PMT but my GP suggested the hormone injection or implant.

I am concerned about how it may affect me mentally so would appreciate your input regarding your experiences both mentally and physically of hormone based contraceptives.

TIA

Hia :)

I could have written your post myself! I was evil with most hormone based contraceptive and I've tried almost everything bar the diaphram (it just didnt appeal!)

I've just had my 3rd implant, and IME its the first 2 weeks that you have it put in that it can make you feel a bit 'periody' but after that I never had any problems with it as I feel that my body just got used to it.

I would be wary about the injection imo the reason I didnt chose it is because if you react badly to the hormones there's nothing you can really do about it until it works its way out of your system which i think can be anywhere from 12 weeks to 7 months (depending on the type of injection!)

HTH hun xx

I've just posted elsewhere but had the implant and lasted 8 weeks of being at times suicidal before getting it removed, and it reversed straight away

Jab I had about 15 years ago and was fine with mental wise but bled every fortnight for a year when stopped which was rather annoying - and you can only go on for 2 years anyway

Hi, I have had both ... twice.... The jag was fine both times but as pper said 2 years max which is rubbish for long term planning. Implant was great pre kids .. no periods or negative effects. Horrendous after kids as I had constant PMT symptoms with insane flash red rage episodes. Had it removed a month ago and feel more like myself again.
