The coil?

I am 21 and currently on the pill. I had my DS when I was 17 and have been on the pill ever since. However,I think it really effects my skin, it effects my emotions and it effects my sex drive. I am fed up of being spotty, anxious (sp?), and never having sex so I mentioned it to the nurse today when having my pill check up.

I also have never really settled into my natural cycle IYKWIM, I don't know what my 'norm' is.

The nurse suggested the coil, but I know very little about it. I've heard it can be painful and I'm a total wuss! Blush. She also said I will make my periods stop but I've read threads on here where people say the bleed a lot.

Anyway I am a bit confused. Can anyone who has use dit offer me some advice, or tell me what it's really like?

Would like to mention that I am getting married next year and would like the option of trying for another baby soon after.

There's 2 types of pill - the copper one and one with hormones in (Mirena). The copper one can make your periods heavier, the mirena generally makes them lighter but can also make them stop altogether.

They usually last for 5 years and they cost the NHS money in terms of fitting as well as the coil itself so I'd have thought your GP would be reluctant if you're going to want it out again next year (so, what 6-10 months time?)

I have a Mirena and it didn't hurt at all going in, I had period type pain for about a week afterwards but no bleeding and it's been fine since (though was only put in 25th October so hasn't been long yet)

It's usually said that the coil takes about 3 months to properly settle (i.e. hormones/periods/etc) so I doubt you'd see much benefit if you were only wanting it for a few months longer than that. Could you maybe try a different pill for a few months?

She suggested that as well. She has given me a prescription for the pill for another 6 months, by which time I will be married anyway! She then said to make an appointment with the GP to get either the other pill or the coil.

I've been reading about the coil online and I have to admit it looks terrifying!

I think I may have to wait until after the wedding and we have decided seriously to start trying for another baby. I just can't bear the thought of putting up as I am until May.

Thankyou for your help. X
