Tell me about tennis clubs/coaching please...

My son has decided racquet sports are his thing. He does squash and the coach say he has a bit of aptitude in it, tennis also (when they get bored of squash they do a bit of other stuff)

But I have this image of tennis as incredibly elitist, club-based, expensive and precious . Is it? And how can one access kids' classes that don't involve having to pay a private coach 50 quid an hour or whatever?

Thanks.

It absolutely is not elitist these days!
And certainly not expensive. I think it costs £30 a year for kids to join our club. The only extra ongoing expenses are balls and obviously coaching but group coaching isn't that much.

Have you got a local indoor tennis centre that isn't private? They might have cheaper classes.

What have you tried so far?

If you tell me roughly where you are I can find a decent club for you on the LTA site!

Lucky you! I enrolled DD in tennis when she was three thinking she would have so much fun and get to be really good since she was starting young. HA! She said it was "B O R I N G !" and quit last term.

It's not elitist - what actually IS these days? (More expensive to go to football than the opera etc etc ad nauseam) And if you can join a local tennis club, not too expensive.

But like anything, if the kid gets good then it does start to get expensive and time consuming. But then so does learning an instrument to a high standard.
