Is 6 years old too young to start learnin drums?

DS desperately wants drum lessons, he has fantastic rhythm and regularly (read into that 'every hour of the day') beats out rhythms on whatever he can find.

We are quite a musical family so he is used to people practising and understands what it is about.

Anybody any idea whether I'll find someone willing to teach a 6 year old?

DD's friend started percussion at that age and she's fantastic (at just turned 9) so presumably there's no physical reason for him not to learn, just finding a teacher. You say you are a musical family, do you have any contacts eho can help? Our LEA runs music centres where kids can get individual lessons, do you have something similar?

Hi, my DS started drums at home with books from library (the best ones come with CDs to play along with) and youtube tutorials at 4. He showed ability so at 5 I approached the Yamaha school. They typically don't take them until 7 but they agreed to 'audition' him. They were really looking for an ability to listen and concentrate for an hour as well as show some musical ability. Drumming has a lot to do with counting so if he can't count in 8's over and again it's probably too early. They saw that he was able, he took his debut exam and got a distinction within months and now at just 7 (in November) he will take his grade 3 in March. Drums is a brilliant first instrument and great for mathematically minded kids.

We have a 'flats' kit at our college which is what the younger kids that rehearse in my room (ages 7-12) use. It is also really easy to move and a little quieter...and cheaper

Not an electric one.... but one like this...
