Anyone got a DS in Airscouts? What's the scoop?

Miraculously DS has found a club he's keen to join (he is very much not a joiner). He thinks that he'll build micro-lites and fly RC aeroplanes and... er, I'm not sure what. Prep to join the RAF one day (which I can live with).

Any experience? Supposed to be like Seascouts but Air- oriented.

Never heard of them before but sounds great!
I think sea scouts are more well known. If you live by the sea obviously. My 5 DS all went through scouting and two switched to the Air Training Corps at 13. They had an interest in planes anyway and one is very keen on joining the RAF.

Do you mean Air Cadets? Unless they've changed name, they're the junior branch of the RAF.

DS went to one meeting and he did enjoy it but didn't take it up as he has a lot of hobbies already.

He did Sea Cadets for a couple of years even though we're nowhere near the sea. They did all their boating on the Thames.

Yes ATC is the same as the Air Cadets. They do lots of things the scouts do like D of E but get the chance to go gliding etc. It takes up two evenings a week too, but DS can fit it in and enjoy it so IMO it's well worth any hassle.

DH was in the Air Cadets many moons ago. Absolutely loved it. Was offered pilot training in the RAF proper at the end of it but decided not to go for it as at 16 didn't want to commit himself for so long. Kicking himself now!

ATC sounds very cool, but I really do mean AirScouts, who are part of the Scouting organisation. DS is only 10yo, too young for ATC.

There are supposed to be 2 active Air Scouts groups locally (SeaScouts, too, but DS is less keen on them). One of local AirScouts group has some kind of RAF certification, but I'm struggling to get contact details!

There must be a local group (ordinary beavers/cubs/scout), scout shop, regional HQ or something near you that could point you in the right direction.

Yeah, have emailed and left phone msgs, hopefully someone will phone back soon. It's so hard to even find a phone number of the local contact person who is supposed to know the contact details of individual groups.

Guides is the same, btw, they can't see any logic to having a single consistent local contact number. Just seems to be the normal way to run these groups. I guess that you have to really want to join to actually get hold of the information that enables you to join .
