Finding a wool camp blanket for Brownies

Already got a 2-pound polyester blanket and started sewing DD's badges on it. But I HATE it. It just feels so cheap and nasty.

Should I get over myself? And be glad that it's machine washable, won't shrink, not valuable in itself, etc.? Or is there somewhere I can buy a decent quality genuine wool camp blanket (preferably not Army Green) for less than 40 quid (preferably less than 15 quid, if I'm honest)?

TIA.

It will be wrapped around her when she sits on damp ground around the fire.

Something that dries quickly and is machine washable or something that takes ages to dry and smells....

My beavers & cub have fleece blankets from Ikea. Soft, washable, non-itchy, and easy for them to sew their own badges onto. And lightweight, which is important when they have to carry their own kit.
The leaders have grey wool ones, which may be from the army surplus shop.

When I say wool I mean 'Wool', as in from sheep hair, not 'fleece' from the recycled plastic bottles factory .
Although maybe the poly-fleece is a better choice, really. I just think it feels like a slightly over-thick babywipe, nothing better. Not that DD minds, but I rarely buy anything made from synthetic textiles normally, which is perhaps why it irks me.

But good point about the camp fire wet and muddy, Clarice. I can just imagine it getting puked on, too.

I am not a snob, honest, my house is a tip and my clothes resemble rags. Just don't like the babywipes feel and quality of it, I guess!! It's so much effort to sew all the ruddy nice quality badges onto such a piece of junk .

I can't do the link but Amnesty International have recycled wool rugs in their online shop at £14.50. They measure 120cm x 150cm and come in 3 sort of checked colours. I think they're nice

army surplus ones sold for Cubs/Scouts are usually grey with the red edge thus

fleece is a lot more practical though - and what would you prefer happened to the old plastic bottles?

I would suggest the Ikea fleece blanket too, for all the reasons (weight, washability, quick-drying) already given.

Sorry for being a bit late but we have fab blankets from the army surplus store. A bit rough texture but incredibley warm. They were my camp blanket when I was a girl guide about 13 years ago. I now have one lining my car boot for the dog!

You can also get the wool socks there too - £1 a pair. When u consider wool walking socks from millets are about £10-15 for 2 pairs thats a bargain. You do need to wash the socks though - they come worn!

There were some lovely British wool blankets for £15 in our local National Trust shop before Christmas - but wouldn't fleece be more practical?

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 18/01/2010 14:26

Err, discovered before Christmas that Brownies sell their own fleece blanket. DD now has one of those.
