DD starting Brownies this week - what should we know?

DD has just turned 7y and starts Brownies this coming week. She is looking forward to it.

The leaflet that came through the post says that she doesn't need anything efore she starts and won't need any uniform to start with.

I did see there was a Becoming a Bownie book - is this something I should be getting for her?

And how long before she gets her uniform and does her Brownie promise.

It is a long time since I was a Brownie!!!

You certainly don't need anything for that first meeting - just make sure her hair is tied back and she has sensible shoes on (trainers are best). I wouldn't buy uniform for a few weeks, until you're certain your DD wants to stay - you might be able to buy secondhand from the pack, or they'll tell you how to buy new uniform. Your DD will get a booklet when she joins that she can fill in as she learns things and then once that's completed she'll make her promise - in my pack we usually do this about half a term after they've joined. She will need to have her uniform by then, but she can start to wear it before if she wants to.

Hope she enjoys it

Thanks.

She seems very interested in it all and has been on the Brownie website this evening looking at all th badges she can do eventually, etc.

That's great! She can do badges whenever she wants (doesn't have to wait for her Brownie pack to suggest them) so if there is anything on there that she likes the sound of she can just get on and do it.

You can buy uniform here, plus lots of other things.

Hope she has lots of fun!

She should be given the Becoming a Brownie book when she joins, but if she is interested in doing badges at home in addition to whatever ones they do as a pack then I recommend buying the Badge book which details all the requirements for each badge - I find it invaluable for my badge-mad DD.
And for heavens sake when you get the uniform don't buy the sash, get a gilet and sew the badges onto that.

Most units will provide the becoming a brownie book..

Adventure books and badge books vary tremendously from unit to unit but like the uniform I wouldnt buy it till your dd is settled

has she been a rainbow?

Hulababy · 18/04/2009 10:06

No, not been a Rainbow - we couldn't make the day we were offered.

If they do badges at home, how are they tested on them? She will love getting the badges! Mind you, I remember the excitment of getting them when I was little.

She can do all the work at home herself, and then just tell her Brown Owl who will ask her to bring the things in from home (or if it is something like the cooks badge then she just needs a letter from you or some photos of her cooking to show she did it).

you normally have to presetn all your badge work and that more than proves that you have done all that is necessary.
