dd is part of a very small pack proposing to go to a PGL centre for a long weekend this summer. She would be almost 8 and is keen to go, should we let her ?

DD2 went on her first pack holiday last year aged just 8. She had a fantastic time. The pack are going again in May and they are all really looking forward to it. There will be lots of 7-yer-olds there. I am a guider and I will be going along too - believe me the amount of work that goes into preparing for a trip is phenomenal. It is really hard to get your pack holiday licence: you have to have a lot of training and experience before you are licensed.

We are taking a group of about 18 away with 7/8/9 and 10 yr olds.

As LadyGlencoraPalliser says the guiding association regulations and red tape is very full on so it will have been risk assessed, everyone will have disclosures done all within guidelines and regulations and DD will have a ball. Go for it.

(PGL centres are also well regulated.)

If DD hasn't stayed over anywhere without you before perhaps you can manage a sleep over at a friends or Granny's before the summer to get her used to being away from Mum.

Another Guider here.

Why are you hesitating, Lizs? (I'm assuming you are hesitating as you haven't yet committed to the trip). Are you concerned about your daughter - whether she's ready for a trip away from home - or about the trip or the leaders?

As others have already said, Guiding holidays are planned to the nth degree. PGL have a very good reputation. I've never been on one of their trips but some of our local Guide units use them regularly.

Have you spoken to the Brownie leaders about any concerns you have?

It is more that she is so young and small for her age, so wondering if despite her best efforts the activities and the whole being away from home on her own for the first time thing might be too much. Her friend is hesitating and she doesn't really know the others.

Update: they've decided to go . A friend's (if slightly older) dd went for a week there last summer and had a great time.

That's great Liz. I'm sure she'll have a fantastic time.
