Piano Prep Test

dd(7) has been playing the piano since last Autumn . Her teacher is putting her in for a Prep Test soon . Can anyone explain how that relates to Grade 1 etc, is it as formal as board exams or simply an internal test with her teacher to assess progress ?

The prep test was a really good experience for my ds. An examiner (nice old lady) sat with him as he played his pieces, she helped him adjust his stool height and did some clapping exercises. She wrote a certificate with lots of very helpful comments which I really appreciated as I don't play at all. Little tips like making sure he was seated correctly and what to aim for next.

Here is a really useful website that has audio clips of what all the grades pieces should sound like. This has helped us a lot! Also, type 'piano prep test' or 'grade one piano' onto youtube to see how other students are getting on! My ds really like this as he can see other people get notes or timing wrong too or are simply amazingly talented at 4 years of age.

The Prep test is a pre- Grade 1 test. However there is no pass of fail, instead they get a certificate at the end of the test with constructive comments on.

I have the sonogn prep test book in front of me here and it says the prep test is designed to be taken when you have been singing a few terms.

It's a good way to get them used to an exam without the idea that they could fail. They get to meet a real examiner and play some pieces to them.

I would say it's about a grade half if that makes sense.
