Thought it might be nice to have a place to swap ideas and experiences. Shall we do introductions first?

My name's MadBad and I've been a Brownie guider for about 5 years.

Guiders.co.uk is working fine for me, what seems to be the issue.

I'm taking over a Brownie unit after half term. Running the meetings will be fine, i'm a tiny bit nervous about the admin stuff.

DreaduCated · 20/10/2013 09:23

Whenever I try and sign up for it, I never get the email to click to confirm my account, so can't post. I've tried 3 different emails, searched through junk and trash folders, tried doing a Forgot Password, everything. Submitted a query form on the contact us page a couple of times, and nothing Sad

Hey all, I've just started as a Rainbow leader, I helped out before at the unit my Mum ran when i was a Guide and absolutely loved it but was just helping out, not organising things.

Anyway, sorry to hi-jack the thread for a little bit but I couldn't think of a better way of finding other leaders, next week I am running the first activity I've organised, we are making bird feeders I may have stolen the idea from my mum and am having a bit of a panic as I've never had to explain things to a whole group of rainbows before, has anyone got any tips? (most of the girls are in year 2 and the two reception age girls we have are quite good at making stuff if that makes a difference)

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 16/11/2013 20:58

Hello, Xochiquetzal!

I work with Brownies, but my best tip would be to show them as you go along, rather than just tell them. That reminds me that it's years since we made bird feeders at Brownies...

Xochiquetzal · 17/11/2013 00:19

Thank you, that is a much better plan, I'm rubbish at explaining things!

Smile bird feeders are one of my favourite memories of being a child. I'm so glad I have a group who really love making stuff.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 17/11/2013 07:46

I find that if we just tell the Brownies what we're doing, some of them get a bit lost, but, if we show them, it sinks in! Different styles of learning, I guess.

Groovee · 18/11/2013 20:19

Interesting discussion on fb about buying your unit's presents. One guider is horrified that the parents money ie subs is being used for buying a present.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 19/11/2013 14:11

Copied this from the FB site because I love it, and it deserves repeating (sorry poster if you're on here and I've cribbed your work).

^"We are not experts. We're your next door neighbours. We're not perfect, many of us are just parents like you. We don't have any more spare time or energy than you do, many of us work full time and juggle our families and our schedules and try to keep it all together as best we can. The only difference between us is that we believe in what Girl Guiding has to offer. So much so, that we contribute our time, our miles, and our talents to help our girls and your girls grow in Girl Guiding.

We complete authorization forms, budgets, and registrations, and fill our homes with boxes of paperwork that you will never see. We are required to take many hours of training as well as attend various meetings so that we can meet our greatest challenge- providing a variety of programs which meet the needs and interests of very individual girls. We try to involve parents who want us to understand that they don't have the time to drive on outings or help at meetings. We rejoice at the generosity of others.

Sometimes we find ourselves going in too many directions, we run out of steam. We have memory lapses. Communication lines break down. Time slips by.

But that doesn't mean we don't care. So many evenings we spend on the phone, seeking advice and support from other leaders when disappointments or problems occur. "How do I keep my girl's attention?" "What are your ideas for the ceremony?" "How do you work with girls in different age groups?"

Our dining tables are covered with bits of rope, menus, trip permits, craft supplies, paper work and badges for each and every girl in the unit. A couple of them won't show up, and don't think to call and let us know.

Sometimes we feel unappreciated. Yet, these girls can fill us with pride at their determination and accomplishments. Their smiles light up a room; and when they say "Thank You", it makes it all worth it.

We help these girls build relationships. Some struggle more than others.
Considerate, loyal, helpful, friendly... is encouraged by the Girl Guide Promise and Law. And sometimes we too must learn these lessons over and over again with the girls. But we are willing to keep learning. Please be patient if we appear distracted or frustrated or overwhelmed at times. Forgive us if we are not the kind of Leader you would be if you had the time. Instead, provide us with encouragement or offer your help. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

We are, after all, only mentors...role models...leaders. Volunteers who have taken an oath to give these girls, your girls, the most precious gift we have to offer- the gift of time.^

::applauds::

Groovee · 19/11/2013 17:16

I love that! Some parents could do with reading it.

Xochiquetzal · 19/11/2013 19:47

Thanks for the advice ComeIntoTheGarden, bird feeders went well, although the girls wear really squeamish about touching the lard to start off with!

Groovee · 19/11/2013 20:44

LOL it was my young leader who was having a hairy canary about the lard. The girls weren't bothered, Xochiquetzal

Sokmonsta · 27/11/2013 20:35

Evening ladies. We've entered into the Christmas spirit. Just had our district carol concert. Our unit attended at short notice and glad that half a dozen girls turned up. Was a better turn out than I expected.

I'm having a planning meet this week with my right hand girl. Organising charity fundraiser, big brownie birthday challenge, thinking day. Looking forward to this being our first plan that is actually ours. Instead of being someone else's and winging it when things get changed around.

EduCated · 22/02/2014 18:00

Thinking Day bump! Just popping on to say I've started a thread about lighting candles this evening for Thinking Day, if anyone wants to join over here Smile

EduCated · 22/02/2014 18:01

Also, seeing this thread has just reminded me I've still never managed to register for Guiders.co.uk! Confused

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 22/02/2014 19:27

Ha! I was just wondering whether to try to breathe some life into this thread, to mark Thinking Day.

I am absolutely pooped after spending the day at a Thinking Day event, so am now relaxing by trying to track down one Brownie's lost wellies and answering 3567 assorted questions from the parent of a prospective new joiner. What larks, eh?

Poppiesway · 22/02/2014 21:14

Quick question..
Many years ago I went on a guides camp for a week in Sheffield to a camp site specially run for guides.. Does anyone know the name of this place and if it's still there ?
I had a great time whilst there. A long way from home but wasn't home sick at all :)

EduCated · 22/02/2014 21:29

Poppies Not Whiteley Woods was it?

Poppiesway · 22/02/2014 22:15

Yes!! Thankyou EduCated!
I was a brownie and guide and now a beaver leader as have two ds's who have both gone through the same unit I'm involved with.

MiniSoksMakeHardWork · 22/02/2014 22:17

Happy Thinking Day all. Had a lovely afternoon with district rainbows, brownies and guides. Still loving it! Found a fab badge for my camp blanket which says 'it's only an hour a week'

EduCated · 22/02/2014 23:18
Grin
ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 22/02/2014 23:26

An hour a week? Well, if you cut short your meeting, never do any admin or shopping for supplies I suppose it could be. ::wink::

Goldencity1 · 23/02/2014 11:44

Ohhhh, I camped at Whitley woods when I was a guide! My first pack holiday when I was 7 was in a big wooden shed thing in the orchard, it had no fridge in the kitchen (we used a hanging larder) and the only toilets were in the bi barn so at Night Brown owl put a bucket in the middle of the room.....it sprung a leak so there was a flood!

Camped there quite a few times as a guide and so remember Brownie revels. This would have been during the late 60's early 70's.

Goldencity1 · 23/02/2014 11:46

An hour a week??? Hahaha.

MiniSoksMakeHardWork · 24/02/2014 20:17

I know. It's a fab, ironic badge. I think I'm going to get one each for my team :)
