Hi all, was just wondering if anyone could give me an answer about tuition. I have just advertised my services for english, maths and english as a foreign language on a tuition website. I have said I charge £15 an hour.
I wasn't taking it that seriously but have already had one request. Am now thinking I may have undercharged myself - I am a qualified teacher having done a PGCE and have 5 years of teaching experience. Although not primary teaching at the moment I am doing adult ed. I also have a TEFL certificate. I am based in the South East - is £15 the right amount, or should I charge more? I would be travelling to their houses, so will be petrol costs involved as well as having to sort out being self employed as well as buying new resources etc, so want to make sure it will be worth my while! Any answers as to what I should put instead very welcome or if I should keep it like that, please do tell!

That is cheap. We told our (long used) tutor to charge more when she charged us £15 ph two years ago. £20 would be better, though if you are near London, £25 might be possible. And you should charge a set amount for travel.

We are paying £25 for an hour of 11+ coaching in the SE.

Think will decline the request I have had, put up my price and hope I get some more takers!

I've just been given the number of a tutor for Primary English, Maths, etc who charges £36 per hour! I thought this was incredibly expensive, but he seems to get a lot of work. I remeber when I was doing A' Levels (about13 years ago) tutors cost £16ph.

I paid £25 but that was through an agency and I am not sure if she had to pass any of it on.

Where I work we get paid £18.60 per hour from the local council. They also come to us by the way.

I think the unions say £30 or £35 per hour.

Tutors around Woking / West Byfleet / Weybridge charge £25 to £30 per hour and people travel to them. There is one person I know who charges £24 per person for 50 minutes and she will book groups of 3 / 4 at a go. Tiffin tutors will run larger groups of up to 10.
