left to sleep in the rain... should i make a fuss?

ds came back from week long camping trip with scouts. on the last night, they sleep in a bivouac they make themselves, covered with a groundsheet to stop rain coming in. ds wqas in the corner, and the croundsheets didnt prevent him from gettign soaked. obviously he didnt sleep well.
i want to make a fuss. why did the leaders let him sleep in the rain? he could have gotten very sick. but, scouts and camping is all about self reliance, and independance, and all those other life skills. he doesnt want me to say anything. advice appreciated please.

tbh i would leave it, its the holidays and he will catch up on sleep.he isn't ill and it wont do much for his street cred

Don't say anything. The leaders give up their time to take your child away. They aren't paid.

but in my heart, i have this niggling voice saying, 'they let my baby sleep in the rain!!!!!!'

Can you really get sick from sleeping in the rain though? It's not cold.

Did he actually tell them he was getting wet?

Don't say anything. As you say, scouting is about self-reliance?
Could your ds not have moved away from the corner?
He does not want you to say anything, so don't.

I don't think you can get 'very ill' from getting wet for one night.

tbh, i dont htink he would have told me either, i overheard one of the other kids telliing his mom that ds got soaked.

I don't think he was so much 'left to sleep in the rain' as 'rain seeped in and he got wet' iyswim .

It's not like they put him outside in the rain!

Don't say anything. I used to go camping at a similar age, and it was a great experience, even when I got wet in the rain.

Bless him, I understand why you're upset but, no, don't make a fuss.

That's why they did it on the last night. If you're going to sleep out, in a shelter you made yourself , aged 11, you're probably going to get wet. It's all part of the experience. And I don't really think he could get "very sick" from it TBH. Not one night, in summer, when he was going home in the morning.

It's all part of the adventure. I think all children should get an opportunately to go camping - real camping.

Agree. getting wet doesn't make you very ill. Having your resistance lowered by extended extreme conditions allows viruses an opportunity to colonise a weakened immune system so THEN you might become ill, but in an otherwise healthy (?- hope I'm not making assumptions!) 11 year old, there'll be no lasting effect except the ability to boast about his manly feat!

Lol, speaking as a Guide Leader, if a child prodded me overnight to say rain was getting in I would help them to fix it. If a child got up soaking wet in the morning having spent the night not sleeping and not trying to fix the problem I would call them a muppet, tell them to get changed and come help make the eggy bread
