Exciting confirmation of the shows! I just hope they don’t sell out before we get to know casting since the tickets are released so early 😬. Much as I wish we could go to watch everything, our budget definitely won’t stretch that far so we’ll have to wait to book!

I think it's likely that although some tickets will be on sale from Friday, NYMT will hold plenty back to be purchasable after casting, so I wouldn't worry about that.

On the website there is a summary of the shows and it says 'In this unique NYMT production, Guys & Dolls is given the Bugsy Malone treatment and performed by world-class child performers'.

Give me all your top tips for auditions. With be DD first time auditioning for NYMT. She was at BYMT last summer.

Parkinbus · 27/10/2026 14:47

Question for those who have auditioned before. 14 year old DD would like to audition but is autistic and even assuming she could get through the auditions, she wouldn't manage a residential stay at the moment. Is it worth auditioning anyway for the experience or possible access to the skills workshops, or wait until she is older?

Haha, you know me, I’m a terrible overthinker 😊. Interesting to see about the casting ideas too - looking forward to seeing how it all plays out. Can’t wait to see who the creative teams are.

Operasingerkath · 27/10/2026 14:56

@anyonefancythetheatre i would say go in and enjoy the day. Last year, younger ones had to choose a song from a list, so be well prepared with that, but have fun with the acting and dancing. My DS always takes the audition as a chance to show what he can do while trying to learn as much as possible and enjoy himself.

@Parkinbus You could always get in touch with NYMT in advance and explain the situation if it helps. The pastoral staff are amazing and will be happy to talk things through so that your DD will be as comfortable as possible. I’m sure she would get a lot out of the audition in any event.

My dd was 15 (audhd) when she auditioned for BYMT. We went for some experience and then she went and landed a place first time at a. Ew musical. I stressed for weeks on end. Pastoral care couldn’t do enough for me. Then she went and I even stayed nearby for a few days but turns out she had the best time of her life. I imagine nymt are the same. Speak to them. The best thing we ever done.

Just really enjoy the day and don't be afraid to be you. If you're a dancer, great, but if you're not, don't let it stress you out. They will be looking for some excellent dancers but not everybody needs to be. So just enjoy the dance, smile and perform it as best you can but don't get stressed. If your DD has done BYMT she will enjoy the audition day, I'm sure.

I would do as others have said and send NYMT a quick message. The team are phenomenal and would be able to answer any Qs you might have about auditions - and I am sure your DD would find doing the day a worthwhile experience. Last year at recalls I met a teenage boy who was sure he couldn't do a residential. He came out of auditions and recalls absolutely buzzing and announced that he had found his people and thought he could manage a residential after all, which he went on to do and adore, so don't rule anything out - just see how your DD feels after audition day, maybe? If you think she wouldn't manage a residential, you could maybe let them know that for this year you would prefer a non-residential course - OR if you can afford a premier inn for a few nights she might enjoy a new musical workshop as a sort of halfway house (if of course the audition panel saw her fitting there) if they could make it work with her leaving after rehearsals every evening (usually around 8.30 or 9pm). They are lovely people and very used to dealing with different sorts of needs, so just drop them a line.

Hi all, another newbie here. My 13 yo has been planning to audition this year but now that it’s all been announced is very nervous! Am I right in assuming she will need to have gone through the song she sings with a singing teacher before auditioning? And is the song performed in front of everyone else auditioning that day?
She is used to performing with her drama group and has had lots of solos/good roles but has recently had her confidence knocked by a singing teacher (separate to drama group) so I’m keen to support/make sure she goes in as confident as poss. TIA!

My dd is also 13 and this will be her 3rd year auditioning. The first year, she'd had no singing lessons as such (had a little input for a role she'd just done, but nothing consistent) and she went on to do a new musical workshop. She's actually had some issues with her voice and for the past 2 years and been under ENT, but still managed another new musical workshop this year! Luckily, through NHS help and an incredible singing teacher, she's doing brilliantly now and the difficulties are behind her.
NYMT really are the most incredibly supportive and positive group of people and that ethos absolutely filters down into the audition space. They do perform in front of each other, but my daughter loves that, as everyone champions everyone else on. Also, NYMT always emphasise the importance of telling the story through song. Of course it's very important, but it's not only about vocal technique!
It's not a requirement (she could practice on her own) but if you wanted a recommendation for a singing teacher who will 100% be supportive, please dm me. Ours does online, and is a trained vocal balance teacher.

Not a requirement at all. If you can afford a couple of lessons with someone nurturing to boost your daughter's confidence, then why not, but it isn't expected. They do sing in the room in front of each other in their age groups (the audition day could have quite high numbers attending but they get divided into 3 groups based on age, and they rotate through acting, singing and dance) but everyone is friendly and supportive. In any regional venue there are usually a couple of auditionees who have done NYMT before and fully grasp the ethos, so applauding each other, helping each other practise dance steps etc is absolutely normal. It's a far cry from West End type auditions where kids do the splits in the waiting room to psych each other out and parents form factions to glare balefully at newbies!! Because the kids are not in competition with each other in the same way, it's a positive and friendly atmosphere and the young people almost always have a great time and come out having made new friends. I hope that might reassure your daughter.

Willthisdoo · 28/10/2026 16:26

Thank you so much @Biscuitsneeded and @seventwelve25, your comments are so appreciated and reassuring! I’m especially pleased to hear that it’s a positive and friendly atmosphere β€” above all, I just want her to come away having had fun!

Hi, does anyone know if the list of song choices for the NYMT auditions will be the same this year as last year and does anyone know when they might tell us?
Thank you

Hi, does anyone know if the list of song choices for the NYMT auditions will be the same this year as last year and does anyone know when they might tell us?
Thank you

Sorry you haven't had a reply yet. Have you already booked an audition? If you have and there were no specific instructions about the song, possibly your DC can sing what they want - or maybe a song list is coming. Perhaps someone who has already booked one can advise? I'm sorry I am no longer a parent of an auditioning DC so I don't know the answer. You could always email enquiries@ for clarification.

somuchbetterthanbefore · Yesterday 12:55

Hello, no particular insights I’m afraid, and also curious - but it says the following in the audition booking confirmation email:

β€œWe'll write to you a little nearer the time with information about what to prepare in advance.”

I’m keen to know more about song choices too so they can start to ponder and familiarise. I think there are potentially two layers to this - the first song they pick for the initial audition and then the second song they might be asked for sing if lucky enough to get recalled for a show.

I’m wondering, do those auditioning on earlier dates get told they’re recalled earlier, therefore having more time to prep the second song? Or does everyone get told about recalls at the same time, therefore all having equal time to prep?😊

Operasingerkath · Yesterday 13:13

Sorry I don’t know about song choice either because my DS is over 18. In relation to recalls, they usually get told within a few days of their audition if they have one, but the recall information isn’t sent until a few days before the recalls start and they all get it at the same time. In the past some have had a few more days to prepare if their recall date is later, for example when they’ve used two weekends for the recalls. Hope that makes sense!

Operasingerkath · Yesterday 13:17

Oh and for the recall they usually pick selected scenes and songs from the show and the auditionee decides which part to go for. That doesn’t discount them from any other part, the team just doesn’t have time to let them audition for more than one.

Livingtheirauthenticlife · Yesterday 13:17

my DS has booked his audition (yesterday) for end of Jan, he’s not 18 till March. I’ll check with him on the singing list and if he’s received that information yet etc

ChazzyB · Yesterday 16:07

Hi @Biscuitsneeded thanks for the message. We have booked an audition but there were no details on song choices yet. Last year I seem to remember it came straight after booking the audition. But think I booked it a bit later last year so am wondering if it will be sent later.

Biscuitsneeded · Yesterday 16:07

I'm going to stick my neck out and say if your DC has a good MT song they love to sing, there's every chance it will be fine for the first round audition. I wonder if they supplied a song list for younger kids last time to help people who might not know what to sing, but since the older ones were able to have a free choice I am sure it would be fine to do your own choice as long as age appropriate. DS went to first rounds where children hadn't read the instructions and didn't bring any sheet music, and they were very nice about it and found a way to assess them. In short, don't worry, it's likely if not definite your DC can sing a song of their choice, and no need to keep back a song for potential recalls, because any material to prep for those will be supplied about a week beforehand to all, regardless of first round audition date.
