Woodcraft Folk

DS2 (10) is interested in joining the Woodcraft Folk.

I've browsed their website, and have it on good authority that the local group is well run, and that the children get a lot out of it.

I would like to hear from parents that send their children to these groups, please.

Experiences, good or bad.

Opportunities, activities, etc.

Thanks.

not sure what you want really .. not if you've looked at their website to be honest .. it's a movement with a philosophy that you agree with or not, if the local group is well run then try it, if it suits keep going

DS (7) goes .. he loves it, he went on a sleepover camp-out last Saturday night (with woodland, torchlit walk, bug hunt, barbecue), brought home a stack of masks he'd made last week .. week before he got thrown to the ground during a game and got a split lip

none of these experiences are really relevant I assume

I like it though, I like the philosophy and trust it is well run

Thanks.

I was wondering about differences in activities compared to other clubs for this age group (10+).

Scouts didn't float his boat - he was on the waiting list for one group for ages, as it was locally recognised as being particularly 'outdoorsy'.

He joined, and was disappointed that they were taught to light a fire using matches and a firelighter, and they seemed to spend a disproportionate amount of time having water fights.

He enjoyed it, but it isn't quite what he thought it would be.

I think he is looking for somewhere where he can be more hands on, and that has a less formal atmosphere - and where the children are encouraged to make suggestions re the running of the group.

Our nearest Woodcraft Folk group is over 20 miles away, so it would be a big commitment to take him there.

I'm waiting for the group leader to phone me back so we can have a chat about the content of the sessions.
