Anyone with a DC in the Youth Parliament?

DS (13) has just been voted in to our local youth parliament. He is delighted, but I haven’t had much information about what it actually involves, or how much time it will take etc. I think he is part of the Youth Cabinet as well.
Does anyone have any experience of the Youth Parliament?

My DD was part of Youth Parliament years ago. She spoke at the dispatch box in Parliament at the National Youth Parliament annual sitting. It was televised so my work colleagues and I all gathered round a lap top to watch it! (Proud mum moment) DD wanted to study politics, but after a gap year changed to Geography at the London School of Economics. She also went on to be appointed as a magistrate at 21 years old. My main advice is ‘turn up’ ! So many get elected and then don’t take the role seriously and don’t turn up. The ones that do turn up get amazing opportunities and it will stay on their cv for a long time.

Amazing! Thank you. He will definitely show up, he is very interested in politics and loves a bit of public speaking. He would be delighted to go to the House of Commons.
I am just a bit surprised how little information we have had so far!

I think it depends on the region/organisers.

My teens don't do Youth Cabinet but do something that links to them. I know in our area they go to Downing Street, Houses of Parliment. They do residential trips, have done projects with the health team, police etc. There seems to be a heap.of opportunities and they are well respected and encouraged by members of the local council.

I've seen them together several times and love their attitudes and enthusiasm. The current out-going Cabinet members all talk about the friendships they’ve made and how their confidence has grown.

I hope he enjoys it. It looks to be full of opportunities.
