I think it great that she relly enjoys it but she never seems to be listening in lessons and seems to have got backwards in her learning.
Is it worth me signing her up to more or the other thing to do is start learning with the local swim club that have lessons once a week but an hour long not half hour (as she never want to get out at the end of the lessons).
Plus with swim club lessons when she's a better a swim she can join the swim club for training (upto 3 times a week). Which is really wants to do (that is train with the swim club) But I think she's to young and has to work on her strokes.

what about individual one-to-one lesson once a week ?

cluelessnchaos · 06/06/2008 19:19

the swim club will be able to give better teaching on her strokes as they like to prevent bad habits. it depends if it is just to do for fun and safety or if she wants to get more into it.

but wouldn't a one-to-one equally help with strokes and technique ? ds has one-to-one and he is gradually honing his technique

Done that but it costs a lot plus she loves her teacher but does mess around even more. Plus she is a good swimmer and she doesn't go to because I say so, as she swam 500m with school and has got her asa level 8. She's kept going because she loves swimming.

Sorry meant to 1-2-1 lessons we've done

dd1 swims 6 times a week because she loves it and is now really into competitions, if that is the road that she/you want to go down then the club is the way to go because they teach "legal" strokes that are required for competitions, not all swimming teachers are aware of the requirements for competitions but if she wants to have a laugh and be a better swimmer then 1 to 1 sound good.

6 times aweek is impressive hope she dosen't get that keen as we are 6-7 miles from the local pool and with perol prices the way they are that would be costly.
How old was your dd when she started to get really keen. My dd is only just 7.
The teachers at the lessons are very good plus some if them are involved in both the pool lessons and the swim club. In fact the teacher she would have if we did a second lesson would probably same one she would have in the swim club lessons.

she was 7/8 when it started getting serious we are also 6 miles from the pool and one of the sessions is an early morning one, they all last at least an hour now, maximum 1 1/2 hour, each time she takes a new training session she is absolutely whacked for about a month and then her body just adjusts. She is a very shy girl and it gives her confidence, especially as it is non contact. They can compete from the age of 8 but I kept her out of it intil about a year ago, so now it is most weekends on top of training, never seem to be away from swimming pools.

When dd was almost 6 yo I booked her onto a crash course during the summer hols. This really improved her strokes and she was able to build up her stamina after that. She is now 7.6 yo and swims 3 times a week (1 hr each session) in a squad. She loves it though isn;t very competitive and needs a "rocket up 'er bum" according to the coach .

lexcat · 06/06/2008 22:02

Would love her to do a crash course and so would she love that. We were a the pool 4 times in the half-term, plus her lesson and she still would have liked me to take her more. But local pool only do crash courses for beginner swimmers.

Thanks everyone decided to sign dd up to the second lot of lesson. From what I've hear she's still quite young for the swim club lessons.
Went tonight and she looked so pleased with herself.
The best thing is we made a deal I was not wasting money on lessons for her to mess about and she had to prove I had made the right choice. Also the add benifit that her teacher won't take any nonsense and she know that as she had her as a teacher before. Any way she had a really good lesson only three (2 boys plus dd)in the class and she work really hard really.
My only worry is one of the boys is from school but he is the year above her and their not really friends in school but get on very well outside of school.
