Can anybody please point me in the direction of a place to buy from, or a brand to look at, for a first guitar? I don't want to break the bank completely but I don't want it to be something impossible to tune either!

Does it have to be a guitar? At 6 it’s still quite hard for them to reach. Ukulele might be easier? Or Yamaha do a guitulele?

my dc started at that age and we got a second hand 3/4 one after recommendation from the teacher.

ibanez is a good brand and quite reasonable new as well.

Probably 1/2 size. Teacher will recommend size and shop. We spend £300something on a new guitar, and case at this age. In 2008. We bought it in a shop, my daughter tried it, liked the look.
Shop assistant recommended it as a good guitar for a beginner, saying that with each additional expenditure there is less improvement, so not need to spend more. I went to the shop as I didn't want accidentally to buy something too cheap and more like a toy. I felt that was fair price taking into account cost of lessons and time she was going to practice. She used it for a year to 2 before moving up.

We got it in London Guitar Studio, Duke Street

Thank you! I'll do a bit of research

With her music teacher’s blessing my DGD’s (age 5) first guitar was bought very reasonably from Amazon! It has served her very well and is only about to be replaced because, now she is 8, it is a bit small for her. On the recommendation of the same music teacher’s we are about to spend £70 on a new one, brand sounds a bit like Ferro Roche……

I'm too clueless to know the brand, hopefully it will jump out at me 🤣

Do they have a teacher - if so could they help? When i was looking for a guitar for my then 10 yr old the main thing i was told to consider was that the strings weren't too far away from the fret board so that the guitar wasn't hard for her to press the strings on. Also need to consider whether nylon strings or aluminium (nylon are softer so less harsh - depends what they're playing'.

Can usually pick up guitars that are fine in a 1/2 size or so for pretty cheap but if you have a music shop nearby i'm sure they'd be happy to help and make sure you get something suitable. Not sure i'd want to spend more than £100 at this stage though!

Not a proper teacher no, just an uncle until lessons become available at school next year. He's been doing violin but is desperate to switch so this is just a stop gap. But I think I'm out of my depth, having never been interested myself I just really want to embrace it when he is!

DD started with a 3/4 size Valencia acoustic guitar when she was 7. They're about £80-£100.

She's now 16 and has an Ibanez electric and a Taylor Mini electro-acoustic (which should last her forever - or at least until she's buying her own!)

The Valencia was a great starter guitar. She did find the electric much kinder to the fingers - think that's one of the hardest things for beginners, getting them hardened up enough.

I massively recommend getting one of the electric tuners that clip on - makes such a difference to fast tuning.

We've used London Guitar Centre and GAK in Brighton for all things guitar. Both had lots of choice and great staff.
