WEK Workshop (West End Kids)

Has anyone’s child attended one of these and can shed any light on what it’s like?

It is described as a one-day intensive workshop but at the same time says Participating in a WEK: Workshop is the sole audition / entry route into all selective West End Kids programmes.

My daughter will be 9 (youngest age that can participate) and I’m just wondering what sort of form the day takes and whether she’d enjoy it / is ready for it.

She currently goes to our local Stagecoach and has recently been signed by their agency. She has an abundance of confidence. She’s 100% serious about trying for a future in musical theatre and we’re starting to sort all her extra curriculars with that in mind. She hasn’t had 121 singing lessons yet (will start in Sept). Due to being in the younger group she has only done small solos and parts max 18 lines to learn in shows at her local Stagecoach. She has not really done learning long monologues for auditions yet.

I’m wondering if she needs to get a bit more training under her belt before I take her to this kind of workshop or whether it would be a good experience regardless of whether she got selected. (If she did, I think we could only commit to associates training or a summer course.)

Some people love it, some people hate it.

My daughter who is a performance addict got accepted into the weekly school (can't remember what that level is called) and just did not gel with it from the get go. She stayed for one term and we saw one showcase.

The kids perform at a very high level and there are some legitimate superstars there. I found it a bit forced and old-fashioned but that is a highly subjective and personal opinion. The quality of the training is excellent and the elite troupe do get some amazing performance opportunities.

Like most stagey stuff, you probably have to try it to see if it resonates with your particular child.

Thank you for the insight, did you find an alternative elite type training group that she did gel with?

She now goes to a screen acting focussed monthly group as that is more where her interest lies.

I have heard good things about the Spirit and West End Musical Theatre traing groups though. Might be worth looking into.
