What are people's experiences of peparation/training ahead of doing the Bronze expedition? DS's school has just announced the dates for the expedition (in June) but haven't given any indication as yet of what any prep/ training might look like (just mention of getting into groups of 7 to do it and a parents video call )

DD’s school did a series of day hikes (approx. 3 if I remember rightly) and then 1 overnight mock expedition in order to prepare for the real thing. They also did weekly after school training for things like map reading, accurately using a compass etc, route & meal planning in the months beforehand.

Day hike.

about ten sessions in the groups covering navigation (compass), route planning, meals, etc etc.

No mock hikes here. But we are in he middle of a massive city! It's not massively far (only 30k over 2 days) and only 1 night sleeping.
They have done compass stuff, and route planning and tent putting up and down.

DD is doing a mock expedition soon - 2 days hiking, one night in tents just like the real thing. but I think they don't have to carry the tents and they get some training in map reading etc along the way.

Ours has a two night camp instead and makes day/night one count as the training which doesn’t seem the best plan for the kids but I guess makes it easier logistically

No organised practice but my dd is doing some hikes with a friend to build up stamina as she is tiny. They are doing one hike per week, increasing length and time, for six weeks ahead. We live in an area with lots of walks and orienteering so it’s easy to do from our doorstep.

We run after school sessions through yr10 covering map work, compass, first aid, using trangia safely, and regular check ins with electronic DofE of other 3 categories. They then do a 1/2 day hike they have planned, then a practice trip including day hikes and overnight camp, cooking etc…then actual assessed trip.
