Best digital piano for a 5 year old?

Budget up to £2,000 (if there’s a really compelling reason to spend that much - it seems to me you can get something fairly good for £750ish). I know nothing about pianos. Help!

Does it have to be digital, you can get a lovely classic upright for that price and you can get a much nicer tone than with a digital.

@Billybagpuss I want something with a low/small profile ideally that earphones can plug into. Not sure if a classic upright would fit that criteria but happy to consider one if they do!

How often might you want to move it? We have a traditional-style digital piano (which cost rather less than £2000!); it's easier to move than a real piano, but it's also heavy, and the base is screwed on. It does, however, look nicer than a keyboard on a stand.

I grew up with an acoustic piano, and while a digital one isn't the same, for a set budget, a digital one will sound better. It also doesn't need tuning, has a volume control, and a transpose button. Ours is by Kawai, but I would also recommend Yamaha. We spent £800 12 years ago, so I guess an equivalent would be more now. Just don't let people put drinks on top of it!

Digital pianos can be picked up for next to nothing on Facebook marketplace/local nexdoor/free cycle type sites.
They very rarely have any problems. You plug them in and go... We have a 20 year old Yamaha one - weighted keys, pedals, volume contol and headphone socket.... picked up for £75, 10 years ago with adjustable height stool (important for younger students). Eldest daughter did Grade 6 learning on it. We will be putting it back on marketplace soon.

Would look at what you can pick up locally. Just check it has been kept in a room in the house... not garage or shed.

They are young and may or may not catch the music bug... if they do, you can look to buy better if needed.

@whoateallthecookies That was another consideration, I think we may want to move it once or twice while we have it, and it’s unlikely to be on the ground floor. I understand a lot of the digital pianos are ‘flat pack’ so being able to take it apart somewhat would be helpful!

Casio CDP-S110BK Digital Piano with 88 Weighted Keys, Black on Amazon was enough to get dd to grade 4 and easy to move around as needed.

Go into a piano shop and play around on some pianos.

I got my 5 year old an ex demo yamaha clavinova 775 for less than £1900 delivered, installed and with full warranty. I chose this piano as they retain their value well, has all the features I was looking for and plays well.

Get a 2nd hand one from 2000s. You can get an impressive Roland or yamaha for £500-£1000. Try sulinda music.

I would recommend Yamaha or Roland. We have an Roland which Ds prefers but Dh likes Yamaha too.

look for hammer action weighted touch.
