What activities - 10 year old boy

In the new year I'd like my son to do another extra curricular activity. My reason is that otherwise after school he will choose to be on a screen - Xbox, watching tv or iPad.

He does football already and over the years has done swimming, drama and scouts. We will move to a city soon so I'm sure there will be a lot of local clubs - can anyone tell me what clubs their 10 year old boys enjoy?

Thanks

Amongst the boys I know...
Football
Rugby
Canoeing
Martial arts
Scouts
Climbing
Swimming
Ice skating

Littletreefrog · 17/12/2024 18:27

Swimming as in competitive swim club not just lessons or Rookie Lifeguards.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/12/2024 18:33

My son does football 3 times a week (2 trainings and one match in season). He does cubs, junior parkrun and athletics once a week. And he is in after school club until 6 three days a week.

He still spends waaaay too much time on screens.

okydokethen · 17/12/2024 18:44

Thanks everyone.

Oh I do think there is a local climbing centre I've heard good things about - that's maybe a good one to try.

Thanks for all the ideas. He used to swim a lot but reached the point where it was training to compete and he didn't like that. He wanted to do rookies but there were no local sessions.

What does he want to do? We have tried loads of clubs trying to find a ‘thing’ for my middle son - at 14 he has settled on air cadets and gliding but we tried climbing, martial arts, archery, Scouts, fencing… Lots of clubs do some sort of beginners course and you can then decide whether to continue.
Air cadets has been absolutely brilliant for both my sons and is cheap £10/month for 2 nights a week activities and all the trips/courses also free or cheap, but they need to be 12 and in Y8 to join.

Scouts. Sailing.

DS did a lot of extra curricula music and sport at secondary school but kept up with the scouts till he was 15. Around that age he was encouraged by a friend’s family to join the local Amateur Dramatics and he loved that. Initially had parts in plays and shows, then worked back stage and played in the band. It was his way of meeting girls.

My 3 ds have tried...

Squash
Cycling
Swimming
Climbing
Rugby
Piano
Clarinet
Violin
Skiing
Scouts
Triathlon
Caving
Diving
Tennis
Cricket

If you have one locally I'd highly recommend Sea Cadets. My son did cubs, swimming, football etc but was gradually growing out of them and didn't enjoy the competitive aspect as he got older but Sea Cadets is brilliant.
In the summer they go sailing, kayaking, rowing, canoeing and paddle boarding ( at 13 they can also do power boats) and in winter work on drills, sailing safety, first aid and lots of just fun games. They get out helping the community as much as possible too(setting up for remembrance day and taking part), river cleans, manning the charity Santa sleigh.
Weekend courses are very cheap and as well as water sports are things like mountain biking, catering, leadership etc.
It's a brilliant combination of lots of fun activities but always with a view to helping the community. DS absolutely loves it and out of the many hobbies he's had is the only one that he never wants to miss if he's tired, has a cold etc

Mumofteenandtween · 02/01/2025 09:18

When ds was 10 he did:-

Swimming
Cycling
Triathlon
Tennis
Football
Trampolining

He liked the cycling best - what 10 year old boy doesn’t love cycling full pelt around a track pretending to be Geraint Thomas!

Noidea2024 · 02/01/2025 09:34

11 year old does scouts, hockey, Dungeons & Dragons and guitar lessons.

9 year old does cubs, swimming & art club.

CurlewKate · 02/01/2025 09:40

My go to recommendations unless rhey have a strong preference for something else are drama and scouts.

Ask at your local theatre for drama groups. Don't get caught up in the franchises-you'll end up spending loads of money

ThereWillBeGold · 02/01/2025 10:00

It depends on what your son likes/ wants to do.
My son is a few years older than yours. Over the years I took him to lots of different groups, football, karate, drama etc but didn't like them. He wasn't getting picked for football, it was really cliquey. He went to swimming lessons for years too.
He is quite shy and staying in all the time, gets anxious going into new groups which got worse after lockdowns.
He started golf which he enjoys but is weather dependent.
He has now joined a junior darts group, had a darts board for years.
Obviously with the publicity of Luke Littler being young has increased interest and its something that can be done indoors when the weather is rubbish. There is a mix of ages there too which is good.
