Cost of music lessons

A friend has been asking about cost of music lessons, but I can't remember accurately.

When dd2 finished I was paying £42 per hour for trumpet (grade 8) and £55 for singing (musical theatre rather than ABRSM)
I thought the singing was probably more because it was through the local theatre, so there would have been room charge and possible admin costs on top.

What would people say is a typical cost?

She was asking me if the price went up much, and I really couldn't remember. I know when my dm tutored maths she charged more the more advanced (as in A-level was more than GCSE etc) they were, but I don't recall the price going up much at all over the years. I may be wrong there though!

I think about £40/hr is typical. My son’s lessons are £20/half hr guitar and £27/45min cello.

I’m a singing teacher - £42/hr

Helpimfalling · 16/11/2024 18:45

40 pounds per hour for guitar

LostMySocks · 16/11/2024 18:48

I pay equivalent to £50/hour. But only 45min lessons.

Guitar - we pay £17 for 30 minutes and the teacher comes to us.

Equivalent of £40-50 per hour, though our lessons are shorter. As far as I know our teachers don’t vary pricing by level, though they will offer longer lessons for more advanced students, which will then cost more. There are some teachers in our area that are geared towards more ambitious/ advanced students, and they charge more per hour, so there is the possibility that it becomes more expensive if dc get serious about music. That’s true of any extracurricular though when you move from hobby to something a bit more dedicated.

If your friend is asking, it sounds as though she / her dc is new to music lessons? In which case I think it is more typical to have 30min lessons rather than hourly ones, if you friend is wondering about the overall cost per week / month.

We’re in Staffordshire and pay £30/hr each for drums and music theory.

We’re doing £25 for half an hour for one child and she’s now doing two instruments. The other one is 16.85 for 20 minutes via school for the other one. Music is most definitely the most expensive hobby mine are doing. I wince a bit when the invoice comes.

Depends slightly on where you are in the country ( London will be more expensive), but anywhere between £35 and £50 per hour for private instrumental/singing lessons.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 18/11/2024 10:24

We're near London and pay £35 for 40 mins.

We pay £28 for half an hour of guitar - SE commuter area. He used to have lessons at school and they were £24 for half an hour. Very much beginner/ foundation level.

Piano in London - 50 pounds/hour
