GirlGuiding Scotland - Brownie Sleepover

Hello,

I was wondering if any Guiders out there can assist me, I am looking for some advice about taking my Brownies on a sleepover.

I am currently running a Brownie group with 15 girls. We have the opportunity to take part in an organised sleepover at Glasgow Science Centre next month, but I don't have a residential license to take the girls away (none of our volunteers do). Does anyone know if it's possible for us to take part even though I don't have my license to take girls away?

I have searched the website but for some reason can't find the information I'm looking for. Unfortunately my commissioner is no help at all, she hasn't responded to me.

Is anyone able to advise me? Thanks in advance!

Is it a girlguiding event? If so they may have that covered.
If not you could ask on your local division or county page if anyone with a GAW licence could help you out.
However, you are meant to submit a REN to your DC 12 weeks (if you are experienced sometimes they will allow 4 weeks notice) before a sleepover so I think on that basis you probably won't be able to do participate.

Thanks so much. I couldn't find this anywhere.

I put our unit down ages ago when we had a volunteer with a GAW license, we didn't get a space but were put on the "reserve" list. I actually forgot about it but Glasgow Science Centre have just let me know that space has become available for us however this volunteer has since moved to Australia! I was hopeful that somehow we would be able to go but it looks like it might not be possible 🙁

The sleepover is just for GirlGuiding so there might still be a chance but it looks like I might have to do some more research before I let parents know.

Thanks so much for your help. I am very grateful as unfortunately my commissioner is quite a challenging person and if she ever responds she will just give me a flat no without any further information!

Thank you!

Do we have the same DC? 😂 I usually email mine and copy in the Division Comissioner so she can't ignore me. Contact your county's residential advisor. GG Scotland will want this event full so I think you will find them very helpful

Not in Scotland.
But usually events like this are so Leaders without camp licenses can go.
Have you been asked to do a REN? Or have you just been asked to get consent and health forms?

There are some Girlguiding Facebook groups just for leaders, with lots of knowledgeable posters in. I suggest asking in the Brownie one and someone from Scotland will know the answer.

For the event at the London Science Museum last weekend, each unit needed its own licence holder. That's because it isn't a "Girlguiding" event - more that Girlguiding just has exclusive use of the building. At this short notice, your best move might be to find someone with a licence to come and be your licence holder. If you've got a District / Division whatsapp group or similar, might be worth putting a shout out on there?

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to thank everyone for all your helpful advice. I often feel like I am the most clueless Brownie leader ever so it was good to get some advice!

Fortunately we were able to work something out, we ended up going to the sleepover with another Brownie group, they had smaller numbers than expected and were quite happy for us to join them, so it worked out well for both units.

My Brownies had a fantastic time and Glasgow Science Centre were great.

Thanks again everyone for your helpful replies 🙂
