Is it OK to attend two different dance schools?

Hello,

My teenage daughter does ballet, tap, modern, lyrical at a dance school she's been going to for a number of years. She went to watch her friend in a dance show for another dance school and was blown away with the Street dancing. She use to do Street at her current dance school but not enough children wanted to do it.
She thinks she would like to try the Street/commercial class at the other dance school but keeps saying she's scared at what the principle of her current dance school will say. She said she will not be happy.
As far as I can see, I can't see a problem. It doesn't clash and her other classes and the school don't offer that class?
Street and Hiphop is my daughters favorite dance and she even said her dream would be to be a commercial dancer one day.

Is this a secret rule in dance schools that you stay loyal to only one? 🤔

I think it depends what sort of dance. My DD moved to a different dance school to do ballet as the tuition was way way better. The ballet teacher said not to continue with ballet at her old school as the teaching methods would conflict.

However in your DDs case it's offering her the chance to study a style that the current school doesn't offer. The only conflict might be during additional rehearsals for shows where there might be a clash?

Thanks.
At the moment it's just to try the class, not join the company dancers or anything at this stage.
I was going to let her to a trial lesson and if she likes it, be transparent and talk to the principle and tell her what she's doing.

I don't see a problem with doing it in itself. I think it could get tricky though. Concerts tend to be held by dance schools around the same dates - rehearsals and concert dates might clash. If class times move around, she may end up with a clash.

I used to do ballet tap and modern as a teen at one school, and then I came across some street dance classes somewhere else which I went to.

Yes, that's a good point. Both do summer shows from what I can tell.
She may have to make some decisions eventually. When she watched her friends dance show she said 'that is my dream to tour the country doing competitions and joining a dance troup'

In that case, if it works and it's not against dance school policy, I'd probably let her do it while it works. If it doesn't anymore, then she'll have to make some decisions.

Yes, let her try the new street classes, and don't say anything to the current school at all. There is no need for them to know.

My DD did ballet at a school where the teacher really did not like her students doing anything else, which is why DD spent several years at an associate programme without her dance teacher's knowledge. DD also performed with EYB twice in that time, and we never told the dance teacher about that either. You'd have thought she would have been pleased that one of her students had successfully auditioned for things, but no.

We got fed up with it in the end, and moved her somewhere else.

Thank you. Yes my daughters words were "I'm scared of name of principle and what she will say! At the end of the day I'm paying a considerable amount of money to her so no reason why she should be. If she likes the first class then I'll let her continue without saying but I think it could get tricky eventually with dance shows etc..like someone Said.

At the end of the day, you are a customer and you are paying for this dance school to provide specific lessons. That does not give them the right to be annoyed if you decide to pay another dance school to provide a different type of dance lesson.

Maybe tell your dd that she doesn't need to worry about the dance teacher, and if anything needs to be said, then you will say it.

Kids shouldn't be scared of their dance teacher's reaction.

No, I'm not happy that my daughter is scared about what she will say. I think she talks alot about remaining loyal to a dance school.

Hmm...

Would you expect the manager of Sainsburys to tear you off a strip if they found out you'd been shopping in Tesco sometimes?

ilovesushi · 25/09/2024 10:32

Go for it with a clear conscience. Her current school doesn't offer that style, so there are no divided loyalties. If your daughter feels very uncomfortable about it, you could have a straight conversation with the dance teacher at her existing school so it is all out in the open and your DD doesn't feel as though she is doing something clandestine. If there are future clashes with shows, deal with it as you come to it. I think you'd be quite unlucky for that to happen though.

Love2dance8 · 21/10/2024 13:19

Hi, thanks everyone. We ended up transferring her completely over to the new dance school and she's very happy!
