Morning all
The Royal Institution (Albemarle St, Mayfair / Piccadilly) runs an annual series of Holiday Workshops for kids, stratified by age (e.g. 7-8 or 9-11 etc). These last 2-3 hours and generally cost £40 (£32 for Ri members) but financial support, from The Potential Trust, may be available for families where that would be financially difficult. (See also 'Free stuff' below).
Here's the full list of Holiday Workshops and there's an at-a-glance PDF here.
My colleague Paul is doing one tomorrow morning (7-8 year olds) and one in the afternoon (9-11 yo) on The Magic of Computer Science which is always good fun. Lots of other people are doing fun science workshops too :)
"In this workshop, Paul Curzon will demonstrate real magic tricks, showing the group how they are done so they can do the tricks themselves.
When you learn to be a magician, it turns out you are also learning the skills needed to be a great computer scientist: computational thinking.
Students will then use the magic to learn the linked basics of computer science. They'll see what computational thinking is all about and how both magicians and computer scientists rely on it."
FREE STUFF
If you're not in London or not able to go tomorrow we have lots of free Magic of Computer Science books that you can download as PDFs. If you have a pack of cards as well that should keep people busy for a while. Each trick also demonstrates a computer science concept too.
