Musical instrument insurance

Any recommendations? DD is in year 7 and has to leave her instrument in the music room when she takes it to school as it's too big and heavy to carry around with her all day. We used to hire her instrument through the local council but now need to buy one so will need to insure it. But I'm not sure if it will be covered if something happens while it's left unattended at school. Trying to read through various policies terms and conditions but I'd be very grateful for anyone with experience!

Check your house insurance. The cheaper of our instruments have been covered on that already, or were cheap to add including cover away from home. The most expensive has a specialist policy with Allianz.

Thanks, I'll have a look.

Musician's Union have a deal where you get £3k of insurance as part of your subscription. Junior subs are £20 a year.

We have DD's insured via that - they also have policies available for instruments worth over £3k.

That's a great tip, I'll look into that. Thanks.

Allianz are really cheap, we have various instruments up to a total value of £8k insured for a premium of about £95 per year.no excess. Friend of mine has claimed from them and said very easy to deal witj.

Allianz - all the girls' teachers use it and recommend - and it means that if anything goes wrong with instruments it doesn't affect other premiums. We have a shedload of instruments on ours.... it isn't that expensive.

yes that's a really good point - a small claim on your house insurance will put premiums for your entire house insurance up for at least 5 years.

My instruments are an add on to the home and contents policy.

thank you all for posting about specialist insurers! Very helpful and cheaper.

Allianz. We do not generally claim on our insurance for anything. But, DD dropped her violin. It was an antique, french violin and worth repairing. We claimed off our household insurance and although they paid up and it got sorted it took a while. Since then I have had to disclose the claim every time I have got home insurance quotes.

Then we took out an Allianz policy. A year or so later, DD had a new, full size violin and bow. Manages to drop the bow at school orchestra. It falls on the tip and breaks. Claimed on Allianz insurance. New bow within a couple of days. Allianz paid the shop. No hassle whatsoever.

Thanks everyone, I've gone for Allianz. They said DD's instrument would still be covered when left in the music room at school so I feel better to have that in writing!
