Explorers for DC with disabilities

DS has autism and some medical needs. He has gone through Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and should move to Explorers in the next 6 months or so. He enjoys going and gets a lot out of it. A PA goes with him to give DS the support he needs. Explorers have raised whether DS will cope with the move because of the increased independence that is part of Explorers. Does anyone have DC who need 1:1 and go to Explorers? Or do any leaders have such DC in their Units?

Hopeful bump.

He may not be able to take part in everything but it is possible. I would have a chat with the DESC (District Explorer Scout Commissioner) who will have an overview of all the groups in the area and they should be able to help. We have run adapted expeditions etc.

Much will depend on the support needed as well. We've had older scouts who have generally been fine at meetings with support from other young people but their PA is there in the background ready to step in if needed.

Thank you for replying. That’s more positive than the conversations I have had IRL. I will contact the DESC.

For some activities once DS is settled the PA can be in the background and only step in if/when needed. For other activities DS needs more active support.

Not involved in Explorers, but in Rangers which is the Girlguiding equivalent. I've not yet had that situation but my unit's approach would be to talk to you and your DC ( and maybe PA) to understand what we could do to support them and their needs and situation. Disappointing to hear that your local Explorer group is not doing the same :(

DD is an Explorer and I think it may depend a lot on the group.

Yes, their focus is very much independent activities compared to the Scouts but lots are teamwork and our leader is very much about being inclusive.

Some activities may not be suitable depending on his exact disability but to be fair, the group has 30 members, not everyone does every trip or can do every outdoor meeting.

I would talk to the District.
