Art classes- what to charge?

Hello!

I am a Mum of 2 children who are 5&6. I am also a semi professional artist, I create and sell original artwork and take commissions locally.

I have been approached to run a local art class for children ages 6-9, i have a business I can use for this and appropriate insurances etc. I am happy to do this however, I don’t know what to charge.

So I would love to know what you would find a reasonable fee for:

6 weeks of classes
Each class will be 1 hour 15 mins
Artists will create one piece of artwork per week
I will hold a small exhibition at the end of block for friends and family and present a certificate of participation

As part of the course each child will receive

  • their artwork
  • watercolour paint kit (24 colours)
  • pallet
  • paintbrushes
  • smock
  • an easel
so they can continue developing their skills after the block of classes at home.

I know how much I need to charge to cover my business costs but would love to hear what parents feel they would be comfortable paying for this type of activity.

Thank you in advance!

If I was booking this for my Dd I’d expect to pay at least £20 per session. You could have a discount for block booking.

What area are you? That will make a big difference to the end cost.

This is going to vary massively depending on where you are - can you a bit of research on classes of similar duration and similar ages (dance, crafting, stem/science workshops)in the area?

for me, something in the neighbourhood of £10/session (between £8-12) would be my expectation, but I think responses will vary wildly

I pay £90 per half term (approx £15 per week) for my teen to attend a 2-hour art class each week. She only brings home her artwork and supplies her own sketchbook and pencils (other materials are provided but not for keeping). We live in a city, but not London.

I was going to say £10 too. I’d prefer to pay less and not get the smock or easel which we already have.

This would be on a par with lots of activities in nappy valley London, if that makes a difference.

I am looking for an art clas for dc2 (age 6) and am happy to pay about £10 a class but I won't be expecting him to take home paint brushes, paint etc just his painting

Totally depends where you live. I don't live anywhere fancy and would pay £5 a class. However I wouldn't want any of the equipment- it's all stuff we already have at home. It might work better as a continuous course rather than a one off thing if you don't do the equipment pack too.

My 7 year old recently attended a class very similar to this. We paid £75 for a 5 week block (so £15 a session) but they didn't get to keep the materials.

my kids do a 5 week block, £45 for the first child and half price for the sibling. Run by the local art college. 3hrs a week. No smock or art materials to take home - but not needed either. I’d be happy for these to be reused and just take the artwork home. We are in the north though if that makes a difference.

Depends on the area. Also depends on how many in the class. Is it for small groups (say maximum 8) where each child will get personalised attention and feedback, or is it the more the merrier? If the former I’d up the price to £15-20 a session. If the latter maybe £10.

Supplied equipment would be a separate issue. IE I can supply it for convenience (at say 30% above cost price) or you can bring/purchase your own.
