Rainbows or Beavers?

Dd will be 4 soon so would qualify for Rainbows. She already has 1 activity she does once a week term time & swimming at weekends.

  1. Would it be too much for her to take on another activity in her first year of school?
  2. Wait until she's 6 and go for Beavers?

There's no squirrels clubs in our area. Currently the Rainbows is on a day I work so may have to look further afield anyway but interested as to which people believe to be more worthwhile . I went to Brownies & Guides as a child but don't remember much of it.

I would find out about Rainbows 'take her along to try. Put her on the waiting list for Beavers at 6, but it then becomes a balance of what she enjoys/has the time/energy to do!

I have a dd is guides and a ds in scouts. Both love what they do - and I'd say actually are pretty similar. But it really does depend on leaders/area more than whether it is scouts or guides I think.

very few groups have waiting lists at the moment, since Covid there’s less children coming through Scouting and taking a while to recover. Groups are also encouraged to not keep a waiting list and share spaces around with other local groups.

Beavers starts at 5yrs 9months.

We've had a strong joining list through Covid. Demand shot up as soon as lockdown finished and we've never seen as much interest. It's clear that there's a demand for extracurricular activities for young people. They've missed so much. I had a request to join the waiting list before being born (needed a dob, so joined at 8 days). Don't delay getting on the waiting list.

My DDs are in guiding and love it. They like the all girls aspect. Both love crafting and cooking so that isn’t a problem. Their rainbows unit did lots of outings and adventures. Same with guides. The brownies unit have games in the hall only. It really depends on the leader. If you know parents with older kids, ask them what they think of the local units.

Just checked and our Rainbows have 89 on the waiting list and only 34 of those are under 4.

My Brownies have 23 on the waiting list and 11 of those are under 7.

I have first aid through work and had to have a seperate review to ensure my qualifications meant that I was able to support children.

I also have to renew my safe space aka safeguarding training and the auto and commissioner reminders started about 6 months before the previous training expired.
