DS is at uni as a fresher and has got MASSIVELY into coxing. As we live in London (SW11), he wants to join a rowing club so he can continue coxing in the uni vacations. Does anyone have any knowledge of Vesta Rowing Club, Thames Rowing Club or any others please?

I have no experience myself but live a bit further down the river and when I'm out running, I see all the rowers.I'm sure someone will be along with some advice soon!

Can he Cox at uni?
Thames is good.

How lovely that he's got into a sport at university though

Ah sorry, think I misunderstood, if he's only available to cox in the holidays in London I am not nature if that will work.

Often rowing clubs are short of decent coxes so I am sure that even if just on university vacations clubs will be keen. That said the tideway takes a bit of learning, so he may find he is relatively novice. It also depends also how competitive his uni is and so may also be worth looking at other clubs eg Sons, AK, Furnivall, Putney Town etc as Thames is amongst one of the top clubs given the 3(I think) Henley wins last year

Thank you so much for replies. DS coxes for his college boat at Cambridge Uni. He knows the Cam is v different to Thames and he has a lot to learn!

I row at Thames Tradesmen's (based at the UoL boat club) I'm sure he would be welcomed there with open arms, but not sure it's what he would be after, it's an older crowd but it's an incredibly friendly club. One thing to note, if he wants to cox on the Tideway he might do well to go a bit further down as from Putney you can only go one way. We go out against the tide and back with it so it's more varied. There are various clubs eg Tideway Scullers (probably a good fit), Putney Town (at Mortlake confusingly!) Team Keane at Brentford. Kingston Rowing club would be good too and not tidal so easier (though as they race downriver he would still need to learn the rules of the Tideway)

Thank you so much for engaging and offering advice. I don’t check my posts as often as I should. DS home from uni and has joined Twickenham Rowing Club
