Is harmonica easy for self-learning for 3,5 years old

DS seems quite interested in music but too young for lessons.
I want to get him a musical instrument that he can learn himself to play tunes.
We got a recorder but DS does not seem that interested as it is not very straightforward to learn.
Is harmonica easy to learn how to play tunes?
I think piano is quite easy but we do not have a piano and unlikely to buy due to lack of space in the house.

My 2 year old does a passable tune on the harmonica but it’s all subjective really.
They’re very slobbery though
could you maybe get a small keyboard to learn piano,

GoldenGorilla · 08/01/2023 16:18

Honestly no I don’t think they’d have the necessary mouth /lip control.

how about a mini keyboard? That would work better for their ages as their hands are too small to comfortably use a standard piano.

I’d get a small keyboard over a harmonica!
They can be really loud and, whilst they are really easy to blow a sound out of, I’m not sure there will be recognisable tunes from a 3 year old.

A keyboard has a volume and if you get one you can use headphones with it could save your sanity.

You would be nuts to give a 3 year old a harmonica 😂

Yeah, I'd say small keyboard - or if you prefer not electric maybe a kids glockenspiel type thing? We had one with colour coded keys that came with cards with colour coded tunes on. DD also had fun with those bath flutes which you tune by adding different amounts of water, they came with colour coded tune cards.
I think keyboard type instruments prob easiest for a little one to pick a tune out on in absence of lessons.

Keyboard with numbers stuck onto the keys. Good for practising numbers too

Giving a child a harmonica is what you do when your DP's XW has really, really pissed you off for the last six months and you aren't brave enough to encourage SC to sit and make a lovely picture with lots of wonderful glitter and PVA just before it's time for them to go home to Mummy. It is not what you do to yourself.

Recorder is tricky at that age - they often can't cover the holes. Try an ocarina? Get yourself one as well - it's much more fun doing it together.

Harmonica is the least annoying inatrument when played by a pre schooler! Recorder definitely the worst. Keyboard probably the easiest/most useful.
